The law Didn't Cover the Case. '
A "lost, sfrayedor stolen" dude
was arrested in Texas' with a parlor
pistol in his pocket, and taken before
the judge, a broad-shouldered, bluff
sort of a -man, who had roughed it on
the plains before coming to the
bench.
"What's the row?" inquired the
court, glowering on the prisoner, who
shivered like a man kindling the fire
on a winter morning, and looked like
he wanted to crawl under the table.
"May it please the court" replied
the arresting officer, "the prisoner
was carrying this pistol," holding up
the weapon.
"Well, what of that?" changing
front from the prisoner to the officer.
"Your honor, the law says that a
man who carries deadly weapons
shall be fined or imprisoned."
"May be it does. It's none of my
business to doubt your statement, but
the law don't Ot this case."
"Your honor, the prisoner had it
in his pocket."
"I don't care where he had it. As
long as it was in his possession, it
wasn't a deadly weauon ; for I'll bet
a drove of steers such a looking bud
of promise as he js couldn't hit a
four story meeting house, with it, five
steps. Turn him loose and give him
his gun ; the peace and safety of the
commonwealth will not be dis
turbed." Merchant-Traveler.
The grasshopper has proportionate

who is not a favorite with the father
of his best girl, says that he will
never cease to be thankful that the
old man is not a grasshopper.
