C?J " ' ' ' ' ""' .. i i iiiiuuit mt Mi IMtoMiw. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY MAY 3, 18S7 WRITING "ENGLISH It is the little words that live. No man can have thoughts too great for small -words to say. Our best and most valued works, whether in verse or prose, that which we all learn first and forget last, are made up of little words; short, sharp, terse and full of meaning. It always was so and always will be. Indeed in many schools o thought it is held that to be able to express one's thought in short words, to say what is to be said in good Anglo-Saxon, is one of the best tests of skill. Here we give a good example. Below is the same thought put in three styles. First, the short, nervous, forceful Anglo-Saxon; then the diction chosen from more extensive fields of language; last ly, the high-flown pomposity of profound polysyllabic complexity which is" in this case a good illus tration of how not to do it. Stung by the foe's twitting, our forefathers (bold wights!) drew nigh their trusty friends, and were heartily welcomed; taught by a former mishap, they began the fight on that spot, and showed themselves unaffrighted by threat ening forebodings of woe. Provoked by the enemies' abuse, our ancestors (brave creatures!) approached their faithful allies and were nobly received; instructed by a previous misfortune they com menced the battle in that place and proved themselves undismayed by menacing predictions of misery. Exacerbated by the antagonist's vituperation, our progenitors (au dacious individuals!) approximated to their reliable auxiliaries and were ovated with impressment; indoctrinated by a preliminary contretemps, they inaugurated hostilities in that locality and dem onstrated themselves as unintimi dated by minatory, vaticinations of catastrophe. Hox. Thomas Ewing at the an nual dinner of the Ohio society in New York on the 21st ult., after paying a gallant tribute to the pi oneer women of his native state, said: "In the year 1790 a lad' made her way through "an almost trackless "wilderness to Ohio on horseback carrying a small boy with her. That woman was my grandmother and that boy was my father." This is a simple record, but, says the Telegram, in the presence of the snorting locomotive drawing its long trainjf passenger coaches and palace cars through the region of the then almost trackless wilderness through which the lone ly woman rode nearly a hundred years ago with her boy in her arms, it has all the weird attrac tion of romance. Tbe origin of the expression "mending his fences," as used in modern politics, is attributed to John Sherman. While secretary of the. United States treasury he visited his home at Mansfield, Ohio, and -was followed by a host of correspondents, one of whom boldly asked the secretary -wKat he -was doing in Mansfield. It happened that on that day Sherman had contracted with a man to repair sonfe fences on his place, so he told the reporter that he had come to Mans field to look after his fences. Thus originated an .expression which has had wide use in politi cal circles and has even found its way into the British house of par liament. When business men have con fidence in the town, are united upon every question that comes ud for the best interest of the place, everyone else has confi dence, and strangers who come in feel they have found -a place they can call home. New and ex . pensive residences are erected and everything works for one common good. This, says th.fe'JWalla Walla Union, is the way cities are made. Began taking Dr. King's New Djgcovery for Consumption, am now on my. third bottle, and able to oversee the work on my farm. It is the finest medicine ever made."
