To the Editor of the Oregenian:
Having pnBsed considerable time
this spriug in the Sound country and
having read and spen considerable
of the so called building ioom in Ta
coma, I will herewith endeavor to
give on an impartial account as far
as my judgment in building goes.
I find that they are putting qr going
to pnt up three one-story bripks. four
two-story and one three story brick
building, all of the very poorest kind,
except the three-story brick, which
will be a pretty fair building. In the
new addition there are plenty of dry
goods cases, called houses, going up.
In fact, I don't think, .brioks and all,
that there will be improvements to
exceed 860,000. They have incorpor
ated, in the last two or three days,
the Tacoma Dock and AVarehouse
company, and talk of putting up a
450-foot dock, to handle all the wheat
of the inland empire. "When the
switchback is finished they are going
to knock Portland and Seattle off of
the map. In fact they claim Seattle
now as a new addition to Tacoma,
but I am afraid that someone will
get badly fooled. My judgment tells
me that Seattle is now and will be
the queen city of Puget sound when
Tacoma will have decayed like Ka
lama, another terminus of the North
ern Pacific. The papers claim that
the men in business here are whole
souled and full of enterprise, but
they appear to me as very mossbacked,
and want the whole earth fenced with
barbed wire to themselves. The
whole place appears to be for Bale,
and you can't step around the corner
without tumbling over a real estate
agent or town boomer. To hear them
talk, a person would think this waa
going to turn into a paradise. I think
when the railroad company gets rid
of all the land it owns in this town
they will drop it like a streak of light
ning. Business is very poor and
everybody is complaining, money be
ing hard to get.
I find that in this place there is no
wholesale house of any kind, and
don't think a wholesale business
could make sale here. In faot, don't
see how the people in this place
live. It looks to me as if they were
living on expectations of the future,
when the town is to be as large as
Chicago. If you talk to one of the
Tacoma boomers (and there are plenty
of them) about Portlaud, the first
thing he will say is: "So you come
from the little village on the oreek.
do you?" Then he gives you a fill
about the Columbia bar.
Since I have been in this part of
the country there have been more
shipwrecks at the entrance to Puget
sound than on the much abused Co
lumbia bar for five years. I will say
no more at present, but shall write
you again in the future.

About twenty years ago I discovered a Tittla
sore on my cheek, and the doctors pronounced
It cancer. I hava tried a number of physicians,
but without receiving any permanent benefit.
Among the number were one or two specialists.
The medlclno they applied was liko fire to the
sore, causing Intense pain. I saw a statement
in the papers telling what S. S. S. had done for
others similarly afflicted. I procured soma at
once. Before I had used the second bottle tha
neighbors could notlco that my cancer was
healing up. My general health had been bad
tor two or three years lhad a hrxfrlng cough
and spit blood continually.- I had a severo
pain In my breast. After taking, six bottles oX
S. S. S. rny cough left mo and I grew stouter
than I had been for several years. 2ty cancer
has healed over all but a little spot about tho
size of a half dime, and It Is rapidly disappear
ing. I would advlso every one vlth cancer to
glvo S. S. S. a fair trial.
