The following are the names of the.go.ve.rnors.of Oregon arranged in chronological erder: Territorial George Abernethy, 1845-1849; General Joseph Lane March to August, 1849; Major John P. Gaines, 1849-1853; Gen. Joseph Lane, March to July, 1853; John W. Davis, November, 1853, to August I, 1854; Geo. L. Curry, 1854 to 1859. State John Whiteaker, 1859 1862; Addison C. Gibbs, 1862 1866; Geo. L. Wood, 1866-1870; LaFayettaJT. Grover, 1870 1877; S. F. Chadwick, 1877-1878; W. W. Thayer, 1S78-1882; Z. F. Moody, 1882-1886; Sylvester Pennoyer, 1887-1891. Of the above all the territorial governors are dead, also Addison U. Gibbs of the state executives. Abernethy came to Oregon in lo4U and was one-of the origina tors of the provisional government which was in force until the or ganization of the territorial gov ernment. He died in 1877. Gen eral Lane was Democratic candi date for vice president on the Breckinridge ticket in 1S60, and at the opening of the civil war threw his influence in favor of the south. He refrained from taking an active part in the- effort to dis unite the republic, and retired M Roseburg, where he died in April, 1881. Gaines was reported to havo been killed by Indians near Fort Boise, Idaho, in 1S54. Nothing further is known of his fate. George L. Curry died in Portland, July 28, 1878; Governor Davis resigned August o, looi, and lelt tor his home in Indiana, where ho sub sequently died. Of the state goyernors, John Whiteaker is collector of internal revenuo in Portland; Addison C. Gibbs died in London, England, December 30, 1886. George L. Woods is practicing law at Spo kane Falls; LaFayette F. Grover resides in Portlandand practices law; S. F.. Chadwick resides at Salem, and "is a lawyer; "W. "VV. Thayer is a supreme judge; Z. F. Moody has returned to The Dalles, his former home. Of the dead, General Lane lived the longest. Ho was nearly eighty years at his death. Aber neiby was 70, Gibbs had rounded 61, Davis1 60, Curry 5S and Gaims 50. Whiteaker will be 67 on May 4th, Woods is 55 or 56 and Moody will be 55 on May 27th. Grover is well advanced in years; Thayer is 57 or 58, and Chadwiok about 60. Sylvester Pennoyer, the present governor, is 54. Grover is the only Oregon gov ernor who has been elected two terms, but he did not serve them, being elected United States sena tor before the close of his second term. Governor Woods was also governor of Utah, receiving the appointment of that office from President Grant. CURE OF TNEUMONIA. Hess Road, Niagara Co., ) N. Y., March 24, 18S6. J About a year ago I was taken with a severe pain in both lungs. I was first attacked with a violent chill, then a dreadful pain and then a cough accompanied by a consider able fever. It looked very much like a bad attack of pneumonia. A friend of mine procured five Allcock's Plasters. One he put under each arm, one under each, shoulder blade, and one on my chest close around my throat. In a few hours the cough ceased, the pain gradually abated and I broke out in a profuse" perspira tion. I fell into a 'profound sleep, and the next day was almost well. I wore the Plasters eight days after wards, and have never had any trouble since. William A. Sawyer. Relative to indictments found by the United States jrand jury at Portland, because of alleged frauds on swamp lands, Commissioner Sparks said at Washingtom last Tuesday, that there were no new developments, but the department is endeavoring to break up what is termed "ring rpbbery." He added: ( "I think, too, we shall have some of them in the harness beforo long." IStickleu's Arnica Salro. Dement & Co. The Great National Puzzle. New York, ApriL 19. The ! Post says editerially: When' -the interstate commerce bill was pend ing we pointed out the fact that the long and short haul clauses would operate as an interstate pro tective tariff, and Ohio wool grow ers have not been slow- to perceive its value in this sense. They are said to be preparing a protest against granting the petition of California wool growers, who have asked that the clause in question be suspended as to their product, representing that its enforcement would be absolutely ruinous to their industry. Ohio wool grow ers are alive to this fact. Also they are accordingly strenuous in insisting that the law be strictly enforced. Producers of raisins in Califor nia have discovered that the com merce act serves to nullify the tariff on foreign aaisins by increas ing the freight charge to oastern markets to a point equal to cus toms duty. Sugar refiners on the Pacific coast, who have been enabled, rby getting their raw sugar from the Hawaiian islands free of duty, to send their products as far east as St. Louis, havo likewise struck a snag in the commerce act and piit in a petition that the long haul clause bo suspended as re gards sugar, to which eastern re finers, who pay duties equal to 100 per cent, ad valorem on raw sugar, havo very properly objected. The salmon canners of the Co lumbia river will be heard from soon, and it will bo in order then for fishermen on the Atlantic coast to stand up for a strict construc tion of tho law. The possibilities of the com merce act as an interstate protec tive tariff are only beginning to be understood. - - Temporary orders were made suspending tho fourth soction of the act on the application of the Norfolk & Southern Railroad com pany and the Cincinnati, New Or leans & Tjexas railroad, as to points south of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi. Horses, Cattle and Chickens. For colic and grubs, for lung fever, or hiile-bound, I give Simmons Liver Regulator In a mash twice a day. You cm recommend it to every one having stock as the best medicine known for the above complaints. In using i with my chickens, for cholera and napes, I mix it with the dough an.l feed it to them once a day. By tills treatment I have lost none where the Regulator was given promptly and regularly. E. T. Taylor, Agt. for Grangers of Ga. San Francisco, April 19. Comparative freight tariffs of the Southern Pacific company and Ca nadian Pacific printed here, shows that owing to the interstate commerce law the latter comoany can make a rate from San Fran cisco to Chicago and common points much less than the former. The difference in favor of the Ca nadian Pacific, ranges from 44 to 188 per carload, according to class of freight. X- nrAn Blood Elixir is tho tkVtS " ony Blood Remedy guaranteed.
