j The' Letter That the London '"Times"
Says Parnell Wrote.
London, April 18. The al-
! leered letter of Parnell, supposed
to have been addressed to Egan,
relative to the Phoenix Park mur
derers, which the Times published
this morning-, has caused an im
mense excitement among all par
ties. In an interview to day,
Clancey, Parnellite member for
Dublin county, branded this letter
as an infamous concoction, and de
clared that it bears -internal evi
dence of forgery. He said also
that suspicion was already directed
against a certain person as the
forger. Irish members of parlia
ment departed for Dublin this
morning "to compare the hand
writing in the letter attributed to
Parnell with that of the person
suspected.
The London Globe, comment
ing on the letter, says: "Until
the horrible accusation that Parnell
wrote the letter is proved we shall
discredit it."
The Fall Mall Gazette says:
"Until the authenticity of the let
ter shall be absolutely proved there
will be no need to discuss its con
tents." .
Tho A7. James Gazette says:
"The letter iso grave a document
that it will not do to regard itas
genuine until Parnell shall be heard
from concerning it."
The editor of the Times will be
summoned to the bar of tho house
of commons to explain tho author
ship of the letter.
London, April 18. Little doubt
remains" that the alleged letter of
Parnell to Egan, which implicates
him in tho Phoenix Park murdor, has
been in possession of the Timcs'lm
days if not weeks, and was saved
until to-day so as to give no time
to parry the blow before the
vote was taken on tho second
reading of the coercion bill. The
case is "similar to the famous Morey
letter forgery in the "Garfield campaign-in
the United States, where
in the Republican candidate was
made to show sympathy with Chi
nese cheap labor and he did not
have time to prove the fraud fully
beforo election.
The Times admits it had the al
leged letter before the exciting
scene in tho house of commons
last Friday night. The ParnelHtt s
now intimate that Saundersom-w as
inspired to make his charge that
the home rule leaders were asso
ciates of murderers in order to
pave a way for the publication of
this .document. The Irish agita
tors say they were prepared for
Saunderson's assault on them and
arranged their own programme in
which every one of them was to
call baunder-bon a uliar in turn
and bo suspended, but when
Speaker Peel saw their game he
stopped it by having Saunderson
withdraw the' accusation after
Healy was suspended. The even
ing papers here declare Parnell'a
letter is a very serious matter, but
they advise caution until its gon-
Lumeness rs proven.
" "London, April 19. The Stand
a i'd says this morning that Parnell
could not do less than repudiate
the letter published in the Times
as an audacious forgery, and it
now iemains for the Times to
prove its author
London, April 19. The Times
says: ""We pay no attention what
ever to Parnell'a big words. If he
proceeds against us we shall apply
only a-tost by which the truth can
Jbe Jbrougbt plainly before the
world-.---We are quite prepared to
meet innr.

Overloading Vessels.
The captain of the schooner
Lizzie Willi&ms was seen at Mr.
j Blair's office, on Market street,
this forenoon. He arrived in port
last Monday and was glad that his
schooner survived the terrible gale
that 'swept the coast last week.
He says it was the severest storm
that ho ever encountered on this
coast. For twelve hours the
chance of living it through seemed
very slight. He inclines to the
opinion that the ship St. Stephen
went down, and that all on board
were lost. Other captains incline
to the same view, but all say that
there is hope that the ship is only
dismasted and may come into port,
although she is thirteen days out
from Seattle.
J. F. Chapmen & Co., of this
cit3', the agents of the ship, have
yet some hopesj that the vessel may
come in. They cannot get direct
verification of the report that the
captain of tho Enoch Talbott saw
her go down. It is reported that
the captain of the Umatilla was
told by the captain of the Enoch
Talbott that the latter saw her go
flown. She was a stanch ship,
built ten years ago and would
naturally survive a gale that the
"schooners could. live in, but she is
the only one of tho fleet not heard
fiom. i
It is the opinion of a captain of
thirty years residence on this
coast, that the -ship went down
because sli9 was ovorladen. There
seems to bo a rivalry among cap
tains to bring in big cargoes, and
the inspectors do not interfere
very much with overloading. It
was said by one captain that if a
master of a ship loaded safely, is
the law of buoyancy and the laws
of the company require, he would
not hold his position long. He
gave tins as an. example. Jt my
ship should come in with 1,S00
tons of coal-RTid -your -ship of
equal capacity should bring in
2,100 tons, the owner of my vessel
would plainly inform ine that
your snips cargo was worth
something and would want to
know why I didn't carry 2,100
tons.
The reporter asked if the safety
of human life was ever considered
when loading a ship for sea. The
response came that the chance of a
smooth voyage was considered.
He said every one familiar with
shipping on this coast knew thai
the wheat and coal ships were
overladen. In lough weather,
when a thousand tons of water
would be thrown by an angry sea
on tho deck of a vessel carrying
2,000 tons of coal, she might not
have the buoyancy to recover.
The captain of the Lizzie Will
tarns says that he encountered the
heaviest part of the gale when
about fifty miles south-sonth-west
of Cape Flatterv. S. F. Bulle
