THIS HPE.
When an organ is being built, if
you go to the factory, what will
you hear? No music, but the rat
tle of the hammer, the saw, and
the plane. No stately and beauti
ful structure will j'ou see not at
alh.you will see dust and shavings.
Here comes the pine and the ash;
and they are ripped out of the
plank: and everything is confusion .
Therens no music in the wood, and.
none in the metal; and they are
subject to all sorts of harsh usages,
till the pipe is constructed, and
another, and another, and all kinds
of them; and as they are finished
they are stowed away; and still it
doth not yet appear what end they
are to serve, except to experts.
And when they are completed they
are packed; and it would seem as
if the whole were love's labor lost;
for the builder has said to the ig
norant spectater: "This is melo
dia, and this is vox humana, and
this is flute, and this is bourdon,"
and so on, all through the unnam
able s'tops; and they have gone to
sleep in the box, and the lid is
screwed down on them, and not
one of them can play or be played
on.
The first thing they know they
are on board of the cars, and are
flying through the air; arid they
cannot communicate with each
other. There is not one of them
that can perform the function for
which it is created. The interior
life of every single pipe is a life
not yet developed; but then there
has' been a great advance in the
construction of it. "When they all
arrive at Some vast cathedral they
are unloaded, and unpacked and
spread about on the capacious
floor, one and another part are
taken up, and the action is ar
ranged inside, and at length they
are all placed in rows. Yet it doth
not appear. All the work that has
gone before was evidently pre
paratory to some grand i-risis and
development. That comes when,
finally, in some twilight hour, the
inspired organist, drawing near,
takes possession of the keys, and
rolls out all the sweetness of birds,
all the thunder of the storm, all the
beat of the sea upon the shore, all
human voices, all love, all beauty,
all compassion. Then for the first
time the completed instrument
gives forth the meaning of its con
structor.
So in this life, when all seem-
ripping, and confusion, and ham
mering and trouble, without con
cord or melody, and while, we are
confined and curbed, and shut up
in houses -as tiiese pipes are m
boxes, and while.wc are going on to
ward the grand cathedral of the life
that is to come, we know very little
indeed; and yet that little that we
may know is, that when we reach
there there shall be the Hand that
shall bring out the whole meaning
of life. Concords of heaven will
spring out of the discords of earth,
until angels and saints and glori
fied men shall lift up their voices,
praising the Great Architect.
And tne plan will have been car
ried on the changing of matter
to mind, animal mind to human
mind, and human mind to angelic
mind; and then all will have been
brought together in the cathedral
of the universe. There is a light
and consolation thrown by this on
all the experiences that we go
through. Life is a good deal like
a stranp-er in a stranere house at
night. He is sick; it is necessary
that he should call for help; he
knows not the door nor the win
dow; and he goes beating about,
seeking to learn; and learns at his
own expense, too often.' The world
of sense is like husk very neces
sary, and yet of very little value
except asa nurse ot tne coming
grain. The me"ans by "which we
are developed in this life we must
not study too closely; their func
tion is not revealed in their action
their heavenly and higher func
tion." The fruit is the explanation
of the trees and of the vine. And
to know from authority above that
the fruit celestial is.the.outcome
of all the treatment in life how
many tears it will cure? How
many heartaches it will soothe!
What light it will throw upon mis
fortune! What riches upon pov
erty! What humility upon pride!
What rejoicing upon sorrow!
Beecher.

Bough on the McOue Boys.
The McCue boys have-lost all
their last season's salmon. They
shipped the fish to San Francisco
for marketing only to find that the
lot had soured owing to insufficient
salting. The quantit' was con
siderable, and with barrels, freights
and incidental expenses the loss
will fall heavily upon the fish own
ers. That all this loss should
have been occasioned by lack of
salt, a commodity that is as cheap
as it is plentiful and easily gotten
makes the unfortunate result seem
as inexcusable as that it is to be
deplored, JBandon JRecorder.
A Washington dispatch says:
The Alaska seal fisheries were dis
cussed by the cabinet yesterdaj'
with a view to their better protec
tion from foreign interference. It
is represented that the govern
ment's interests are now threat
ened by the wanton and wholesale
slaughter of seals in the open
ocean. It seems that during the
day tho female seals leave their
young on the islands in charge of
the males, while they go miles
away in search of food, with which
they return at night. Recently a
practice has sprung up of catch
ing the female seals while they are
in search of food. Their young
perish, as a matter of course, and
the perpetuation of the animals is
endangered. The difficulty of
controlling this matter arises from
the alleged want of jurisdiction of
our government over those waters
beyond the three-mile limit. The
question "will be again considered
at a future meeting.

THE "WHOLE LUMP.
A disease in one part of the body
will. eventually fill the whole body
with - disease. Every year -or 'two
some o'arifof the system giows weak
and begins tc dircay. Such part
should be removed at once and new
matter be allowed to take its place.
There's no need of cutting it out with
the surgeon's scalpel. Purge away
the old, diseased and worn out
parts with Braxdreth's Pills. Then
the new body will take care of itself.
