The New York Times says the Mormons are after a state. There is one state they have already got alitlle too much. It is the marriage state. Jersey City Argus. The failure Of the rivor and har bor bill does not exasperate us as much as it does some folks. Our harbor was not down for a share of the plunder. Martha1: Vine yard Herald. Some years ago a Dakota man sold his" wife for $4,000. With this money as i starter he made a fortune, and now he cynically de clares that he owes all his good fortune to his wife. "That fellow calls himself a bol dier, and he never smelt powder," said Jones to Smith. ''Never smelt powder, eh?" "No, sir." "I think you're wrong. I saw him kissing a society girl the other night.'" Boston Courier. Bishop Warren of the Metho- dist Episcopal church, does not believe in gentle preaching to rich sinners. Tie says there are some pastors who get at it in this style: "Brethren j-ou must repent, as it were; and be converted, in a meas ure; or you will be damned, to some extent." Judge (to prisoner) It's dis graceful, Rastus, that, there are such men as you to prey upon the community. Did it ever occur to 3'ou that you are worse than worth less?" An English clergyman relates that once, when endeavoring to make an assembly of children un derstand that the wearing of a uniform was a mark of distinction and involved responsibilities, he said: "You see a man walking very erect, dressed in a red coat; who is he?" "A soldier, sin' "Right." You see a man wear ing a kind of helmet, and dressed in blue; who is he?" "A policeman, sir." "Right again." Then the preacher, with a parson in mind, said: "You see a man dressed in a black coat and wear ing a stiff, white collar; who is he?" A masher, sir." WORTH KNOWING. Adhere3 to Former Instructions. Washington, April 5. In the matter of the restoration of lands granted to aid in the construction f u i1 and telegraph line from Portland to Astoria and from Forest Grove to McMinnrille, in the state of Oregon, as provided by the act of forfeiture approved January 31, 1885, the secretary of the interior has decided on appeal of the Oregon & California railway company to adhere to the instruc tions issued July 8, 1S85. In determining what land shall be restored as adjacent to and co terminous with uncompleted por tions of the road, it is held that these lines form two distinct roads and that the lands lying northwest of Forest Grove in a quadrant, formed bj' the meeting of the sep arate grants, should be restoFed to the public domain as not lying op posite to and coterminous with an' portion of constructed roads. This decision will affect the dispo sition of about 275,000 acres of land. Capsized in the Oceur d'Alene- Spek.vni: Falls, April 5. Nel son Martin's boat, the Spokane, struck on a drift about one and a half miles below Kingston, on the Cceur d'Alene river on her return trip to-daT, and sank. Five lives are lost, as follews: J. C. Ilanna of Spokane Falls, N. J. LTiggins of Bangor, Maine, Mr. Pike, rep resenting LTegele & Co., of Port land, Edward Jerome, of Lewiston, and another man, name unknown. There were nineteen passengers on board at the time. A survivor of the accident states that nothing could be done to save any of the men who were lost, and from the swiftness of the current and the existence, of drifts, it i.s only a wonder'that more lives were not lost. The steamboat wgs taken completely under the drift. The captain and engineer " were ar rested, but set at liberty on their own recognizance. A party of men are making every effort to re coyer the bodies, but those ac quainted with the locality consider the search useless.
