A fishing boat manned by Peter Peterson and Jack Welch sailed from Aberdeen a few days since, bound for tho Columbia river fishing grounds. This would appear toa landsman like a dangerous trip, but fishermen fre quently make it and laugh at the idea bf danger, says the Herald. But it's no laughing matter. This particular boat was twenty miles southwest of the Columbia river and well out to sea when picked up by a -tug, with little show of making port but for tho chance encounter. "Well, that's queer freight! Where is it going?" asked a visitor yesterday, as, 'looking out the door, he saw a Columbia river fishing boat, in nil the glory of glistening paint, hauled past. Hundreds of these boats are now being put in trim and aro in the water at every point along the river front. In a few days they will bo dotting the river from the bar half way to Kalama. They go to reap tho 3,000,000 harvest that without sow ing or cultivation is every year gar nered from the fruitful field of flowing water in front of our city. Some one will immortalize himself and establish a just claim to the grateful remembrance of his fellow citizens if he will invent, discover or create Borne way that Astorians can tell if tho mail is. in without having to go to the postoffico or institute an inquiry. "Is the mail iu yet?"' is the regular afternoon inquiry. Some times the mail boat is down at 230; other days, 5, (it has till six to get herej aiid the matter of getting mail is a daily problem, for no ono knows whether the mail is in or not, unless he sees the hacks go past or meets some arrival, and on Telephone days this makes it still more perplexing. As it was in tho beginning, is now and ever shall bo till it is different, there are a good many precious Hour lost in the aggregate by inability to know just when the mail boat gets here. Tho caro of the complexion has be come an accomplishment that no lady of refined tastes can afford to ignore, and in leading society circles it claims as much thought as do the fashions.
