Swamp Land Investigation.
At last there is de6nite action'
in the matter pi the swamp land
frauds in this state. The United
states grand jury now in session is
giving the matter thorough inves
tigation. The particular subject
of inquiry is whether any one in
the effort to acquire these lands
has committed perjury or has ob
tained any one to commit perjury,
or whether there has been conspir
acy to defraud the United States
out of any swamp land or any
other land. If the jury finds rea
sonable grounds for supposing that
any of these crimes have been
committed they will indict the
parties.
A cloud of witnesses has been
summoned from different parts of
the state. Among those who
have already been before the jury
are Hon. T. "VV. Davenport, Hon.
Warren Truitt, Hon. I. Townsend,
Gen. Tolman, J. A. Fisk and many
others. Four witnesses arrived
here yesterday from Burns, in
Harney valley. They have been
six days on the way, having been
obliged to go around into Idaho to
get hero. One of them, Mr. Mc
Menaney, is in the employ of Mr.
Todhunter, a cattleman, and Mr.
I. L. Poujade, and the others are
also cattlemen. A lot of wit
nesses have been summoned from
Camp Ridwell, Cal.. and Judge
Townsend, register of the land
office at Lakeview. will arrive to
day with the books and maps per
taining to his office.
Special land agent Shackleford
has a whole box full of maps at
the office of the district attorney,
and though he says nothing, he
looks as if he was now hauling in
his net with good prospects of
catching a big lot of swamp angels
and other fish. Of course no one
can tell who may be indicted by
the grand jury, but if there is any
one who is more likety to be in
dicted than any other it is Hen
Owens. As he has been associ
ated with man', including even
some state officials, in swamp land
transactions, there is a glorious
uncertainty as to who may be
placed on trial for having acquired
too much swamp land. Orerjo

Persons who stay in-doors all tha
time and lean over a counter or a
desk, sooner or later discover that
their lungs are giving out. Editors
are often thus afflicted. Erastus K.
Sutherland, editor of The Eastern
State Journal, "White Plains, New
York, writes:
"I have used Allcock's Pokous
Plastees, in my family since 1S68.
In that year I had an attack of pneu
monia from which I was not ex
pected to recover. My lungs were left
in a very weak state. I commenced
using Allcock's Porous Plasters,
wearing them constantly three
months, two on the breast and two
on the back. The result was sur
prising, at least to me. The pains in
my lungs had left me, and I felt like
" a giant refreshed with new wine.".

Hisrh License In New York.
Albany, March 2-3. Bourbon
was banished to the gallery yester
day, where, side by side with
.prohibition, it watched the strug
gle over Crosby's high license bill.
As soon as the bill was announced,
ex speaker Erwin moved to call
the roll of the house and the only
absentees were Evans, of Oneida,
and Hill, of Albany, who were ill
in bed and were formally excused.
Assemblyman Crosby offered
three amendments that were
agreed upon by the friends of the
bill. One increased the cost of a
"shopkeepers' beer license" from
$50 to 100. another struck cider
out, and the third made high li
cense applicable only to cities of
more than 400,000 inhabitants. In
other words, only to New York
and Brooklyn. All three amend
ments wero adopted by the Repub
lican majority, but not until after a
long period of argument and fili
bustering by the minority. The
Democrats made a series of vigor
ous assaults on the bill and fiilibus
tered nearly four hours. The bill
finally passed by the votes of G9
Republicans and 1 Democrat for,
and 52 Democrats and 4 Republi
cans against. The bill provides
that licenses to sell liquor of any
kind to be drank on the premises
shall be not less than 1,000. A
license to sell malt liquor and
wine to be drank on the premises
shall be not less than $100. The
storekeepers' liquor license, to sell
liquors of any kind, not to be
drank on the premises, and drug
gists' license are to be not less
than $100 each.
