Twenty-nine foreigners own 20,647,000 acres of land in this country an area larger than that of Ireland. The best modern improved siege gun costs $97,000, and every time it is fired the ammunition costs 900. The system of numbering the hours of the day from twelve to twenty-four is gaining favor with the railroads. Tms year will solve the prob lem shall Chicago or San Fran cisco control the trade of the Pa cific northwest. The interstate commerce bill utterly fails to compel palace car porters to make a distinction be tween long and short hauls. Mrs. Liveemoee shows that there are now 227 occupations open to women against seven at the beginning of the century. Congress will convene at noon December 5th. About two p. m., December 6th, the interstate com merce law will be repealed. It costs the government for each United States senator 5,000 a year salary, and $5,307 a year additional for attendants and in cidental expenses. The appropriations made by congress from 1800 to date for the erection and remodeling of the United States capitol amount to over $15,000,000. Of the legislatures of thirty eight states, nineteen are Repub lican and nineteen are Democratic. There are twenty-two Democratic governors and sixteen Republican governors. In China a son is responsible forihe debts of his father, and this responsibility continues to the third generation. This enables a man to borrow money on the strength of having a son. An association has been organ ized in Tacoma "to follow truth wherever it may lead." If the newspaper men of that pretty lit tle place can be. induced to join it it will cause a cessation of regret on the part of numerous contem poraries. Henry Ward Beecher said years age: ,I never had any sym pathy with the Ep:scopal prayer, 'From sudden death deliver us.' When I go I pray that I may go swiftly, like a falling star; go in the 'midst of my usefnlness, and not be chained in some living death, a burden to myself and the friends I love." The supremo court of Tennes see decides that the conditions and contract that are mentioned on the blank messages of a telegraph company are not binding on the sender of a messase, although he may have knowledge of them, they being invalid, as the tele graph company cannot contract against its own negligence. A new telephone and a sure cure for consumption are among the discoveries of the week. The new telephone is in succesful op eration between Paris and Brus sels, a distance of 200 miles. The consumption cure is successful in Philadelphia, and consists in in ject! ng.carbonic acid gas. It's a dull week that doesn't produoe at least one invention or discovery. The Paris reports that the drummers and trumpeters of the German army are hard at work learning the Deats and calls of the French troops. It also alleges that in many engagements in the w&r of 1870 the command to cease firing was often given to the French infantry by German bu glfre, nd that the command to halt, sounded by the same buglers, often stopped a charge of French cavalry and placed them in a posi tion where they could be mowed down. 3IASKED DINNER PARTIES. They are "all the go" just now at the east, and just novel enough to be attractive: Several of them have been given, bat the participants have kept so quiet about them that they have not yet made their way into the pa pers. The element of fascination in these dinners is, of course, as in all masked entertainments, the amusing surprises when the women unmask just as they rise to leave the men to their wine. It was because one of these little entertainments was so unique and amusing that the dinners got talked about, for the party could not forbear telling it afterward. At these dinners the guests are known only to the hostess, at least the worn en .are, because the men are not in mask. No one but she knows who is to come, either, beoause with the invitations goes a plea for absolute secrecy. At a recent one a young man, a husband of some three years' standing, came into the drawing room about 7 o'clock to find five wo men, all in mask and only to be distin guished by a little ivory number hung by a bine ribbon to the shoulder strap of their low-necked gowns. He had made some vague excuse to his wife, who had asked him to stay at home that even ing, about having business down town, and had dressed at the club. The men had numbers to match those of the women to choose from at ran dom, and to his lot fell the number four, whose companion hung to the shoulfler of a tall and splendid crea ture, whose arms and shoulders were as white as the purest blonde, though what could be seen of her hair was perfectly black. Before fish was re moved lie confided to his partner that until that evening he had preferred blondes, but from that hour his alle giance was transferred to their dark haired sisters not pausing to con sider, base man! that his wife's eyes were blue and her hair like flax. His companion proved to be decidedly ninaiious in aispoauion, mougii she apparently had never seen him nn . ? n t it t. before, guessing wide or the mark whenever he hazarded any conjec tures as to his past, his tastes or his tenperament. Such a temptation was irresistible. He told her several ex citing anecdotes in which he fig ured heroically, and poured revela tions -of himself that were nearer being what he would like to be than what he was into her willing and credulous ears. His companion seemed to be disposed to ilaunt her conquest, and (as his wife was not thereto glance at him between the candles) he wore his flowery chains rather ostentatiously. "You are sure you like brunettes best?" she whispered tenderly, as the hostess gave the sign to rise and un mask. "Never could bear blondes," he re plied gallantly, and then gasped : "Kellie!" and sat down suddenly and limply. It was his wife in a black wig, and there was an uncanny gleam in her eye. It was telling this joko that let the cat out of the bag about theso quiet little masked dinners. "Want to Know. Yon Know. We clip the following astonishing sentence from that compendium of pure English, the New York Sun; "For the past thirty days it has been the talk on 'Change that Norman B. lieam, whose $200,000 residence was burned lately, and whose luck for three years has been so phenomenal, that from being so thoroughly 'bust ed' that he had to order his trades closed he is now worth several mill ions, has at last been hoodooed." We have the greatest respect for that esteemed contemporary, Mr. Dana. We believe that as a vocabulary, as a journalist, and as a friend to the un dertaker, he is without his equal in this country, but we think he owes the public some explanation as to this new verb, "to hoodoo." Whence it is doorived? Who dood it, so to speak? And what did the dude who did do it mean it to mean? And should he not have said that Mr. Beam has at last been hoodone, and have gone on to tell hoodone it? Life. Can Put In Time To Good Advantage. It is now said that the world will not come to an end until A. D. 3000. This leave's us 1.113 years in which to study the second section of the inter state commerce bill. The tuno is short, but by a little hustling we think the work can be done. St. Louis Qlobe-Democrat. Notice to Mariners. To the remark that vessels at an chor have the right of way, it must be added for the benefit of transatlantic-captains that there is no use of trying to run down a bit of land so securely fastened as Long island is.
