London, March 15. A dispatch
from St. Petersburg to the Daily
JS7eics says: "While the czar was
j returning from requiem services
in the cathedral of St. refer and
St. Paul, a bomb attached to a
cord was thrown in his direction.
The intention was to tighten the
siring which was connected with
the mechanism and thus explode
the bomb, but before it could be
executed the criminal and his sus
pected accomplice were seized.
It was found that they lived to
gether in a lodging house in the
suburbs of the city. The police
visited this house and discovered
a quantity of explosives and a
number of revolutionary pam
phlets. Over 200 persons have al
ready been arrested in connection
with the affair. The German po
lice had warned the Russian au
thorities that an attempt would be
made against the czar's life, but
the latter failed to trace the plot
ters. A telegram from Vienna
confirms the JVejp.s' dispatch, and
says that the bomb was thrown
under the czar's carriage, and that
it was shaped like a book, so that
it could be carried in the hand
without exciting suspicion.
One of the six students arrested
in connection with the plot carried
a hollow book containing a bottle
filled with dynamite and poisoned
bullets; others had parcels and
bags containing bombs. The dis
patch also says it is alleged that a
woman was arrested wno nan a
bomb concealed in her muff.
Further details of the alleged
attempt of the life of the czar havo
been received to-night. The ar
rest of the men implicated in the
plot with internal machines on
their persons has led to the dis
covery of papers proving the ex
istence of a widespread conspiracy
to assassinate the czar, and further
attempts are feared. It transpires
that the conspiracy against the
life of the czar is of a more por
tentous nature than even the firm
est believer in the plot supposed.
The plot has among its originators
and supporters a vast number of
persons scattered throughout Rus
sia, embracing mon and women of
every grade, from the noble to the
peasant. Tho situation is regarded
as very serious, and a large num
ber of arrests have been made.

There will be no leap year be
tween 1890 and 1904. The ordin
ary test of. division by four would
make 1900 a leap year, since no
remainder would be left, but in
revising the calendar, Pope Greg
ory XIII. found that it would be
necessary to count as leap years
only those centurial years which
would be divisible by four hun
dred without remainder.
If a box six feet deep were filled
with sea water and allowed to
evaporate under the sun, there
would be two inches of salt left
on the bottom. Taking the aver
age depth of the ocean to be three
miles, there would be a layer of
pure salt two hundred and thirty
feet thick on the bottom "of the
Atlantic.
