- rzj Wkt Sattg gMiorian. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY rEBIJUARY S3, 1SS7 Theke are 1,500 school teachers in Oregon, and V 5,000 school chil dren. The area of Oregon is G0,975, 360 acres. Of this 36,778,775 acres were surveyed up to June 30th, 18S4. Since then 2,868,318 acres have been surveyed, leaving 21.328,267 acres still unsurveyed. How would it do, asks the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, to expend a few millions of the surplus rev enue in buying out Canada and settling the fishery question for all time to come? Ont. of the shortest bills, if not the shortest, ever introduced in any legislature is that recently presented bjT Mr. G rover, of Maine, which reads: "Be it en acted by the senate and house of representatives in legislature as sembled, as follews: Sec. 1. The dog is here"by declared a domestic animal. Sec. 2. That this act shall take effect when approved." Since it is an admitted possi bility for a great man to accumulate a large fortune, the Washington Republican thinks it will not be advisable to carry the war on "millionaire senators" too far. We could not consistently support an amendment providing that every senator elect must file with his credentials a certified copy ol his honorable discharge from an alms house. According to the New York Mail and Express Patti has not washed her face for fifteen years. She believes that water causes wrinkles, and as a substitute she speads cold cream on her face and neck, lets it stay an hour or so, and then has it carefully removed with a towel. The S. F. Post thinks that the unwashed bomb thrower at the Grand opera house should have selected some other victim. Now tli at A1. Holman and the legislature have simultaneously ad journed, comes the question, what is the governor's little intention? When the honorable the members "of the state senate, and the equally honorable the members of the house sent his excellency word they were about to adjourn, he never said anything about special session, nor murmured his thanks, nor expressed surprise nor resigna tion. He just said he was "wait ing for them to adjourn."' And now that the gang has quit, comes the question, what is the governor going to do? It is a singular commentary on recent history that the probable victory of the government in the present German elections, narrow as it is, is due to the order of Leo XTI. Bismarck owes his majority in the next Berlin reichstag, to the Pope. After trj'ing to crush the Vatican," the great Bismarck had to appeal to the Vatican for aid in his extremity. That he got it was a surprise to many in and out of the Catholic chuich. The Pope directed Catholic voters throughout Germany to vote for Bismarck's measures, and thus conquered Bismarck's enemies for him. The next move will be an interesting one. The present session of the Eng lish parliament is said to have re vealed a remarkable and unex pected solidity between the Glad stonian liberal party and the Irish allies, thus bringing together- in reality as well as in name, Eng lish, Scotch, "Welch and Irish in one solid political combination for the achievement of home rule. It is a remarkable fact that not a sin gle Gladstonian liberal who had been asked, but promised to sup port Parnell's amendment to the address. It -was prophesied that the plan of campaign would smash thehomerule party into fragments, but the party survives, and the coalition is stronger than it ever im before. A "Washington newspaper cor respondent says: There is no longer any doubt here that Carlisle is to be secretary of the treasury. It is also thought to bo -settled that Pendleton is going into the cabinet, and that Garland is going out. There does not seem to be as much certainty as to Col. La mont, but it is the opinion that he will be made postmaster general. He has wonderful executive abili ties and great skill in dealing with men. The sneakershio has be come a pressing question. Ran dall's candidacy will be Stout! re sisted by all the revenue reform ers. If Carlisle is not in "the next house, the absence of Morrison will be a great loss to the reform ers. Hatch, of Missouri, and Mills, of Texas, arc talked about as can didates for the speakership. Both being ex confederates, the ques tion will arise whether that will make the men available for the speakership. The belief is that the part can now safely rest upon the assumption that the war is at an end and the country at peace. Wild Cherry ami Tar. Everybody knows the virtues of. In The Astorian of the 22nd a card appeared over the signature of one A. Y. Gitibl), containing sundry charges against the undersigned, No notice would have been taken of the matter were it not for the fact that The Astokiax leaclics many people who are strangers to both parties, to this now public though not serious attair, and all who may take enough interest in it to read the former, should have a chance to hear the other side. "Whatever faults and imperfections I may have, falling or icfusing to pav my bills is not one of them, which fact is well known in this community. As to this man Grubb I will siinplv say that partially on my recommenuatiou ne was ap pointed sexton of the cemetery at Clatsop; lor a time he preformed his duties reasona bly well, but after a time he ceased to do his work and 1 was compelled to hire others to do it. As a matter of course I paid the man who performed the labor. His grievance lies In the fact tliat I did so. lie lias oeen not onl v paid for all his ow n labor, but often paid In advance, his receipts are on file in my office and can be promptly produced whenever required. Furthermore all the other statements made above can be fully substantiated, lie has publicly become so inefDcent and obnoxious around the cemetery that the attention of the city council lias been called to Ills case and probably a new soxton will succeed him in the near future.
