A good many years ago tho gelter up of local items for this family jour nal was told by a wise old man that if ho (the w. o. m.,) could have just one little privilege from the Lnver ot all good, it would be the gift of in difference; the power to treat with indifference all the little slurs and sneers and stings; and ignore or over look all the annoyances and worries of life. It would be a good thing; but it is unattainable. Probably tho best thing one can do under tho cir cumstances is to look at tho fnnny side of life, to see the ridiculous as pect of affairs; and in this way one will often be able to laugh, when otherwise he would feel -vastly differ ent. Especially is this the case when he run3acros3 people who won't be pleasYd, who are determined 'to clis" agree: who would like you and all your tribe lots better if you would unly give them some cause to kick up a row with" you, and if you decline or omit to give them such cause they'll have the row anyhow; right there is where the laugh comes in. The ideu of anyone enjoying hard words Bnd scowling glauces; the ri diculous position in which such peo ple place themselves, frowning in the face of smiling Nature, is always lu dicrous. It is not worth while wasting time or breath on such people. That is their way of seeking enjoyment; they just don't know any better. The best way is to laugh at them and let them pass, along with book agents, and cort s, and tho mau that leaves the door open, and other little annoy ances of Jifel A case in point is given in illustra tion. Last summer, shortly after election, Gov.-elect Penuoyer came on a visit to Astoria. The Casino troupe were aboard and were to play at Boss' op era house that night. The governor elect was to be there. Astoria and Clatsop county had given the Demo cratic standard bearer a majority and that, of itself, made him of sufficient importance to pay him attention. So when Mr. Pennoyer stepped out on tho balcony of tho Occident hotel to niako a speech, a shorthand reporter was at hi3 elbow; every word ho said was taken down; the notes were written out, and by soven o'clock were on the cases of the compositors in The Astorian office. By eight o'clock a proof of the article was ready; it was read, a "revise" was taken whioh was carried up to Gov. Pen noyer where ho sat in bis box lookiug at the play. That gentleman rend it, made two slight alterations in punc tuation, and handed it back with complimentary reference to tho accu racy with which his remarks had been reported. The speech appeared int The Astorian tho next morning. When the local reached the office that morning he found au offensive partisan who 'was prancing around at a great rate, and who at onco wanted to know what in shool aud condem nation was meant by printing such stuff and .saying Pennoyer spoke it. He knew a blessed sight better; he'd been right there; right there, sir. and heard every word Peucoyer said, and it was a blank shame for The Astorian to- go to work and print what it did and say the governor made those remarks. The speech was a very good speech of the kind, and was correctly and accurately reported. But it would have been useless to becomo vexed with the growler, and it would hava . been crutl to show him what a con summate heehaw ho had made "t himself, so the local just laughed at j him. Somehow or other it seemed to tease him more to be laughed at than had the other fallen into hi3 fancy and started to explain or show that! he was right. These growlers serve a good pur pose. They show what a terrible re venge tho Almighty takes on them and such as they who institute a quarrel with Him for having things as they are. He twists their intes tines into a hard knot, squeezes the last drop of the milk of human kindness out of their caked auato- mies and permits them to drag them selvas around for a few miserable years as object lesson? of warning to those who are in danger of forgetting that ono of the best rules of life is to "Bear and forbear." Unnecessary Misery. Probably aa much misery comes from habitual constipation as from any derangement of the functions of the body, and it i3 difficult to cure, for the reason that no one likes to tako the medicines usually pre scribed. HAMUUKli I'ltfb were prepared to obviate this difficulty, and they will be found pleasant to tho taste of women and children. 25 oents. At all druggists. J. J. Mck & Co., proprietors. S. F. No Time for Another Investigation. A writer in tho East Oregon Ian makes the strong statement that ub respectable woman will hold a clerk ship for the Oregon legislatnre;'that a number of the female clerka are simply mistresses of members, and that during the regular adjournments from Friday till Monday, some of the "lady clerks." provided with railroad passes, follow their legislative "friends" to Portland, where forty- eight or more hours are spent hilari ously by tho parties. weLcome. What Trne Merit Will Do. Tho unprecedented sale of Boschee's Qerman Syrup within a few years, has astonished tho world. II Is Without doubt the safest and best remedy ever discovered for the speedy and effectual cure of Coughs, Colds and the severest Lung 'rouble.. It acts on an entirely different principle"' from the usual prescilptions given by Physician?, as It does not dry up a Coush and leavd the disease still in the system, but on the contrary removes the cause of the trouble, heals the parts affee'ed and leaves them in a purely healthy con dition. A bottle kept in the house for use when the diseases make, their ap pearance, will save doctor's bills and a long spell of seihms il!nes. A trial will convince vou of these facts. It Is po-it vely sold by all druggists and general dealers in the land, Price, 75ots., large bottie3. THE -'DAWN" PROBABLY SAFE. A Plea3inc Piece of Readers. News For Our Boseburo, Or., Feb. 15. The tele graph operator at Empire City writes under date of February 13, that there was a steamer outside with a small steamer in tow. He thinks it waB the Santa Maria with the Dawn. Each of them had signals of distress flying; they ccnld not go in on ac count of the rough bar, and no tug being on hand they went south. A Cae of General Interest. While civil suits, attachments, gar nishees, etc., are of daily occurrence in-justiees-courts, they are- rarely of sufficient interest' to the public to call for much newspaper publicity. But a case" was decided in Justice Cleveland's office yesterday which trom the principle involved is worthy ot passing notice. In brief the case is this: U. V. Hansen, of the Globe saloon, brought suit in the justice court against M. Yocum, fur goods, wares and merchandise sold and de livered to Yocum, and mostly con sumed on the premises, to the amount of $67.20. When presented with the bill ho did not at first decline to pay, but promised to liquidate at some convenient opportunity. On mature reflection, however, he refused to pay and suit being brought, his wages ad fireman on the tug Columbia were attached, and the amount duo him was gurnisheed. When the case came up again his lawyer set up the plea in extenso tbet his client, was a mariner sailing tne high seas, aud as -suoh, his wages couldn't be attached. Justice Cleveland was not exactly clear as to that beiug good law. and went to consult Judge Deady. the fountainhead aud repoa.tjry of much of webfoot jurisprudence. The judge said that such was the law; that any one employed in any capacity on board auy craft entered ia the custom house, whether they signed shipping articles or not, were exempt from tho usual legal process at the hands of creditors, served on ordinary land lubbers who must pay for what they get. Fortified and sustained by this assurance. Justice Cleveland felt no hesitancy in complying with the man dates of the statute book and admin istering the law as be found it, so, yesterday, the cace was disposed of as follews: Tho motion fordisoharge of attachment was sustained, but judgment rendered in favor of plain tiff for the sum of $67.20, and interest thereou at the rate of eight per cent, per annum, from September 9th, 18S6, and costs of action. As it staudp, plaintiff has judgment for amount claimed, but defendant'1 wages cau't be attached. There appears to be. a large 7x9 moral attached to tho workings of the law, and, while mariners are always good pay, there is no attachment law in Oregon that will hold good against any ono who claims to be a mariner and substantiates the claim.
