Holbrook, a leading physician of Denver, has just re covered his iwelve-year-old daugh ter, whom he had mourned for nine vears as dead. He found her a wild maiden of the forest, totally unversed in tue ways of civiliid tion. Her recovery was accom plished in a wonderful way. A hunter, says a correspondent of the St. Louis Globe. Democrat, while wandering; in the depths of the Salmon river mountains, far from the habitations of man, saw before him a beautiful lake in the grandest, wildest natural settings giant cedars, with festoons oi moss and towering columns ol granite. A fair girl, unadorned, unclothed, excent bv a fleecv wealth of gelden hair, stood waist deep in the water. Site looked with a nervous stare that betrayed a wild nature. She sprang from the water and disanneared in Mack, yawning cavern. There might be such a thing as a mer- maiu, out, ne aia not oeiievc m ghosts. He hastened to the camp. It was dark when he found his comrades by a log fire. They wen old hunters and knew not fear. The story of a lone girl in that rutuiuy soniuue was reiaieu. me flickering flaine cast shadows more weird; when the owl hooted and the echoes died away the stillness deemed oppressive. The three nimrods visited the lako next morning. The same fair creature was standing at the foot oi the cliff beyond the water. She was clothed in the skins of wild nni mals; her hair was blown bv the light breeze in fluffy ringlets about her shoulders. She was startled, looked for a moment about her and fled. They told their story in the val ley, and, with the newspaper man, started out again in search of the maiden. Alter hours of toil they discovered an entrance to a sub terraneous cave, near the lake. They halloed; an echo answered as from a wall. A stir in the pas sage and a frightful visage was seen, with tangled strips of gra hair dangling, with blinking, wa tery, red eyes glaring, as a feeble, trembling Indian tottered forward, tiis attitude was that of defiance as he placed himself in the door of his dungeon, but the withered form and palsied arm were a miserable caricature of the warrior of fifty years ago. He was pushed aside. The reckless men rushed forward, guided by a torch, through a winding tunnel into a great cave, with many an gular recesses, and uneven roof and walls. Corners and columns divided the vast interior into apart ments. Une ot the divisions was the wild girl's boudoir. Seated on a robe in convulsions pf fright, was a well developed maiden ot twelve years. The torch dazzled her sight. She turned her face from the intruders and bowed her head and sobbed pitifully. They did not approach her, and turned away and passed from her pres ence, filled with sorrow an.l moved with sympathy, which her intense emotion seemed to communicate to even these thoughtless young men of tho plains. The withered old man wa3 found to be dumb. When addressed in the Nez Perce Indian lanEruaere he could under- stand, but replied only with signs. rom the description given of the girl, only by certain marks up on her body, Dr. Holbrook recog nized her as his daughter, and left for the mountains to bring her to his home. When he attempted to embrace her he was hurled back as if he had attempted to embrace a tigress. 1 tie Indian was ad dressed in his native tongue by one of tho cowboys, and gave signs, affer some delay that he un derstood the situation. He com municated to the frightened child by signs and errunts. and she st- tied down on the robe and stared with wild eyes at those around her. As the trirl can sneak no lan- guage but a sort of pantomime, the father determined to brino the old Indian with him to Colo rado. The story of the girl's life is siraplp. In 1877 St. Joseph's war riors raided the country in the vi- cinity of Salmon, river, and took Holbrook's wife and daughter. The mother was released, but the OREGON, SUNDAY, FKBRUARY (, 1887. j daughter kept in captivity. Oregon's Probably Share. Washington, Feb. 4. Under the bill which passed the senate to-day to credit and pay the sev eral states and territories all moneys collected under the tax levied by act of congress, approved August 5, 1861, Oroson will re ceive, 1 the Dill becomes a law. nearly $30,000. Oregon's origi nal quota of the twenty million levy was $35,140; but the govern ment, three or lour years ago, re paid to her 15 per cent, of this amount. Washington territory's apportionment of the lev was $7,775, which she never paid. By the bill, however, she will be re leased from this indebtedness. The total amount called for bv the bill will reach nearly 15,000,000. From the present outlook, the hill will pass the house this session, and it will not be surprising if it passes within a week.
