A Trip Toward the Uehalem.
Editor Asteeian:
j Thinking the many readers or
The Astoeian would be pleased
to hear something from the Neha
lem country, I will give you a
brief description of my trip to that
country.
Starting from Astoria the weath-
er was fine and the water smooth,
We had a very pleasant trip u,i
the Young's andjKlaskanine rivers
to the Kamm farm where we spent '
the afternoon and the night fol- j
lowing. Wc were entertained b'
Mr. Peterson, a very genial gen-
tleman and foreman on the lv.am n
farm. After a very pleasant night
and a good breakfast, we started
on our way rejoicing. For about
four miles we passed over a i oiling
or hilly country on a very good
road; the country is dotted with
nice looking farm house, which de
notes a prosperous neighborhood;
thence for about ten miles there
is no settler, although there is
good land along the route. The
first settler in the Nehalem is a
Mr. Wage, a now settler; one
mile further and we come to Mr.
Denver's; he has a fine place.
Uere wp noticed quite a band of
nice cattle. The next place is a
deserted place belonging to Mr.
Bender, the janitor at the custom
house, and adjoining is Chris.
Olsen, a new settler.
Haifa mile and further we come
to the residence of W. H. Lewis
who has avfine farm. He has six
ty or seventy acres in cultivation.
Hero we saw some nico looking
cattle and two fine younc colts.
Half a mile further and we corne
to the residence of John Wesley
Slaughter. He also has a fine
farm and a nico band of cattle.
Near by is Mr. Evans the Fish
hawk smith, also a new settler.
One mile and a half and we enme
to the residence of Squire Rob
bins. All have heard of the wom
an on the Longtom hunting for
the well with a ten foot pole.
Well, we actually saw the squire
wading two feet deep in water
with a bucket to get to his spring.
He says he does not believe in
drinking creek water when he has
a eood spring: on his farm. Acro--
the creek is the residence of W.
A. Foster. He has a fine farm
and it is very productive, w
should say, from the nurabt-r of
hpads we saw bobbing around.
Here is located the Fishhawk
schoolhouse, a log structure, ton
small, we should say, for the pres
ent need of this prosperous neigh
borhood.
Half a mile further we come to
the residence of J. W. Walker
Beine wet, hunsrrv and tired, we
were glad to accept the hospitality
of our friend Mr. W., and he en
tertained us well. He has some
nice cattle and some fine horses.
Nehalem is certainly the finest
part of ( laisjp county I have yet
seen. All that is needed is a wag
on road from Astoria to the Neha
lem river. Then this part of the
connty would be as good as a-iy
part of Oregon.

FAlUflNGDALE, L. I., N. Y., )
Sept. 2, 1SS5. )
I have been troubled for several
years with an affection of the nerves
which no doctor or no medicine
could cure until I tried Bbaxdretii's
Pills. I would be taken with a vio
lent pain in the middle of my spine,
and my arms and legs would twitch
violently. It acted something like dt.
Vitua Dance, for I couldn't control
my limbs. It would come and go once
or twice a month, lasting two or
three days at a time. Finally, at the
beginning of one of my attacks, I
took five Beandreth's Pills. As
soon as they acted freely I found my
self almost well. So I continued tak
ing them for a month one or two a
night. It is now a year since I have
had an attack, and I attribute my
cure to Brakdbeth's Pills.

As we are seldom heard from
except in connection with some
road petition, I have something
I have
about.
else to write
"VYe have
about twenty settlers living on
unsurveyed land. Some of them
have lived for years and several
have lived for fifteen' 3ears on
their claims and are still unable to
get their patents. We have made
efforts to get our land surveyed;
we have petitioned and have of
fered to furnish the men to make
the survev if the government
would furnish the surveyor and al
low us to Help ourselves. Our
settlers here have trouble in deter
mining the division lines between
their claims. Old settlers are sell
ing out their improvements and
leaving because they cannot even
go on an extended visit without
being in danger of losing their
work. They have to sell their
work for fifty cents on the dollar
and even lets. Four of our set
tlers have died and their heirs are
unable to get a title to ihe years
of hard work done on the claim.
We have over twenty settleis and
putting a very low ostim.ito ou
their improvements there is over
10,000 worth of labor done and
over 3,000 acres of land which
would soon be taxable if surveyed.
There are at least fifty good claims
yet to be taken on the township
we wish surveyed that is fit for
agricultural purposes, and very
nearly all the remainder is valua
ble timber land. Some of it is
very fine fir timber, beside spruce
and some cedar. When there is
anv wav to ret lumber from th
tnoutn of the Nehalem river this
will be valuable. Is it necessary
to givi any more reasons why it
should be surveyed? We should
like to know jsoine reason why it
shot'ld not.
Yours trul)',
