Believed to Be a Sale.
New York, Jan. 19. Negrotia-!
tions for the sale of the property
of the Oregon and California rail
road company to the C. P. Hunt
ington interest, which have been
pending for nearly three years,
have at last been brought to an
end by the conclusion of a definite
contract between Andrew Haes,
of the firm of Haes & Son, acting
for the London committee of bond
holders, and Mr. Huntington, act
ing for the Southern Pacific com
pany and the Pacific Improvement
company.
The terms of the agreement are
substantially as follews: Oregon
& California fir.it mortffa":C bond
holders are to receive at the rate
of 110 in exchange for their pres
ent bonds new forty-year gold o
per cent, bonds, guaranteed, both
principal and interest, by the
Southern Pacifrccompan-, together
with 4 in cash for each old bond.
These new bonds, to be issued at
the rate of $30,000 per miio, are
to be secured by a new mortgage,
equivalent, in point of lien and
priority, to the existing first mort
gage of the Oregon & California,
and will be.ir inteiest from July 1,
1SSG. Oregon & California pre
ferred stockholders will secure one
share of Central Pacific, together
with four shillings sterling for each
preferred share, and the common
stockholder will get one Central
Pacific share for every four of their
own shares, together with three
shillings sterling for each common
.share.
The purchase of the property by
the Huntington interest will result
within eighteen months in the
completion of the Oregon & Cali
fornia road to a junction with the
Central Pacific system at the Cali
fornia boundary, thus opening
through lines between San Fran
cisco and Portland.
The 0. & 0. Eailroa'a.
San Francisco, Jan. 19. A
stiong probability now exists that
Montagu station, on the line of the
California & Oregon railroad, al
most directly on a line with Yreka,
will be the winter terminus of the
road. Mr. Scobie, masonry con
tractor, received word from the
authorities at Fourth and Town
send streets a few days ago, order
mg him to confine his work to thib
point. Ten miles of the track yet
remain to be laid before Montagu
can be reached, and it is more
than probable that the force of
men employed there will be taken
off and put to work on the South
ern California projects of the
Southern Pacific. One of the rea
sons stated to account for the dis
continuance of the work on the
northern line is tfiat a disagree
ment has taken place between
Messrs. Standford, Huntington
and Crocker of the Southern Pa
cific and Henry Villard of the Or
egon & California by which the
negotiations for the sale of the
latter line to the Southern Pacific
have fallen through. Should no
satisfactory conclusion be come 10
the California & Oregon line will
be extended to Klamath river and
then continued into eastern Ore
gon. The Rapidity of Progress Toward Health.
Een when a good remedy for disease is se
lected, depends in some measure upon the
manner in which it is taken. Irregular, in

Hop Culture.
More than a dozen times a week
I am asked; "How many hop
roots to plant on an acre: and
"Do you think it will pay to plant
hops now?" To the latter ques
tion, if your soil and location are
suited, ana you go in witn means
and determination to stay, I would
answer "Yes;" but if one or both,
or all three of these conditions,
are absent, tnen of course, "No."
Hop growing in "Washington ter
ritory is 3ret in its infancy, and
many will doubtless fail and lose
money on their ventures
I would say that five thousand
hop roots should be planted to the
acre; that is, if vou want nearly a
full crop the first year. "We now
practice planting a double hill, so
to speak, and afterward destroy
one half of it by the plow; that is,
we plant two roots on one side of
the pole, and three about twelve
inches distant on the opposite side
If the land is good and well pre
pared, large roots planted and
properly cultivated, no fear but
you can harvest fourteen hundred
pounds per acre, planting in March
or April and harvesting last week
in September of same year. 1
hae, in excej'tiona1 tubes, har
vested over a tou per acro the first
year, under conditions as described.

How's
Your Liver?
Is the Oriental salutation,
knowing that good health
cannot exist without a
healthy Liver. When the
Liver is torpid the Bow
els are sluggish and con
stipated, the food lie3
in the stomach undi

blood; frequent headache
ensues ; a feeling of lassi

nervousness indicate how

means of restoring more
people to health and
happiness by giving them
a healthy Liver than any
agency known on earth.
It acts with extraor
