A ruined city, hitherto entirely un known, has been discovered in the provinco of Adan.i, Asia Minor. Prof. Bakhuv7.cn, of the Leiden ob servatory, finds reason for believing that a part of the planetarv surface of Mara is liquid. A German ireographer and statis tician. Dr. A. Fischer, estimates that an annual slaughter of 40,000 ele phants is necessary to supply tht ivory exported from Africa. The first atclwopteryx, the fossil remains of the oldest" known bird, which seems to form the "connecting link" beween birds and reptiles, was discovered in the lithographic slute of Solenhofftn in 1SC1. Another socv imen recently found in the same locality, has been sold for 5,000 to the Berlin Museum. A remarkable variation has beet: observed in the stature of the inhab itants of France. If a line be drawn diagonally across the country fro.n Manche to Lyons the people to the northeast of the division have an av erage height of 5 feet 6.6 inches, while those on the southwest side average only 5 feet 4.6 inches. Prolific Weeds. A botanist has attempted to estimate the number of seeds found upon some of the most obnoxious weeds of this country. For shepherd's purse he makes the number 37.500 per lant; dandelion, 12,103; wild pepper grass, 18,400; wheat thief, 7,000 ; common thistle, 65,367; camoinik, 15,920; butler weed, S.5S7; rag weed, 4,366; com mon purslane, 333,800 ; common plan tain, 42,200; buiaock, 33,068. Qualities ok Y.'oons.-Prof. Sargent finds that the strongest wood in the United States is the nutmeg hickory of the Arkansaw region, and that the weakest is the West Indian birch. The most elustie is the tamarack, the white or shellbark hickory being far below it. TIe least elastic and the lowest in specific gravity is the wood of the Fictts aurea. The high est specific gravity upon which in general depends value as fuel is at tained by the bluewood of Texas. How Coasts Have Formed. In a paper on the history of the develop ment of coasts, a German geologist, Dr. Fischer, reaches the conclusion that whore coasts have been formed by the erosive action of waves and streams, terraces and flat surfaces are the prevailing characteristics, with semicircular bays of small ra dius on terraced coasts and large radius on flat coasts. Where other features exist, they are mainly attrib uted to subterranean movements and comparatively recent changes in the level of the land, some modifying effects having of course been wrought by the sea. Apparent Distance of Sun and Moon. To determine how far off the moon actually appears from the eye the late Mons. Plateau devised an ingenious experiment, which may be repeated by any person. Looking steadily at the full moon a few mo ments, he turned suddenlv rout H toward a wall, and noted the size o; the dark accidental orcomplimentaiy image when projected on the waif. When, by moving forward or back ward, this spectral image is made to assume the size of tho real moon, it m'ftst appear to be the same distance from the observer's eye ; and Mons. Plateau found his distance from the wall to be about fif.y-six yards. In a similar manner -Ions."Stroobant proved the sun's apparent distance to be about fifty-three yards. Birth of tite Microscope. The origin of the microscope, that most important instrument of modern re search, is lost in the mists of antiq uity. A rock crystal lens and a microscopic engraving w.ere un earthed by Layard at Nineveh, and many of the gems in tho British mu Eeum could rot possibly have been cut by their ancient engravers with unassisted sight. Later evidence of the use of wair-filled glass globes as magnifying and vurning glasses is furnished by Plir.y, Seneca and Plutarch. Alhazen," the Arabian, made known in Europe the magni fying power of lenses about the meyenth century. It is generally believed that the first microscope with double glass was invented by JanBen,ml590,althoughRogcrBarxii i3 credited with a previous invention al Oxford in the thirteenth century. Extent and Velocity of Storms. Prof. E. Loomis finds that in the United States a low pressure area, with only one system of c'clonic winds, frequently has a diameter of 1,000 miles, and that cyclones over the Atlantic frequently have diame ters of 2,000 miles. Widespread areas of low barometer, having sev eral centers of cyclonic action, may hate a diameter of 6,000 miles or may oven form a belt extending nearly, if not quite, round the globe between the parallels of 40 and 50 degrees north latitude. On the other hand, tropical cyclones are often only 500 miles, or oven less, in diameter. In the United States, the signal serv ico records for thirteen years show that the average rate of progress of storms for the year is 28.4 miles per hour, rising to the maximum, 34.2 miles, in Feoruary, and falling to the minimum, 22.6 niileB, in August. In Europe stonn3 travel much mora .slowly, tho mean rate of progress during tho fivo years ending 1880 being 16.7 miles, reaching the maxi mum of 19 miles in October, and fall ing to the minimum of 14 miles in August. Cure For Files.
