There is a necessity for much re planting of coltoa in South Carolina, r.nd there is a great scarcity of cotton seed. The Newfoundland seal fishery has been uncommonly successful this season, and many steamers have re turned loaded down to the water's edge. A new variety of Russian wheat produced in Dakota last year a crop of forty bushels to the acre. It re sembles in outward appearance No. 1 Hard very closely, but inspectors who have examined it pronounce it worthless, being brittle and much below grade. There is so little demand now for the famous Sea Island cotton of Soutii Carolina that few planters have sold their last year's crop. It was formerly used to ailuiterate silk, but the de mand has ceased without any appa rent reason, except that by means of improved maohinerv ordinary cotton ma' be used for thread and other purposes almost as well as the long Btanle. Few people have any idea of the extent of the tobacco manufactures of this Continent or of their rapid growth. Lat year 3,457,509,017 cigars and 994,3: 1100 cigarettes were manufactured in the Tinted States alone, requiring over 91,000,000 pounds of leaf. In 1872 not 40,000,000 pounds were used. The vastbulk of tobacco, however, is consumed in "other manufactures," which re quired 217,431,000 pounds in 18S4. The catch of codfish off the New foundland banks during 1SS4 was the largest on record. The French take annually .100,000 quintals of cod, worth $1,440,000. Americans take a large quantity, but no leturns aro kept. The whole amount taken dur ing the year was 1,830,417 quintals, showing Newfoundland to be the largest and most valuable cod fishery in the world. Next to it comes that of Norway, with an annual catch of 700,800 quintals. An article is going the rounds of the newspapers telling about the "first pottery in America," said to have been established in this city about the year 1830. This may have been the first porcelain pottery in this country, but it was certainly "not tho first pottery. There is a plate in this city made In Lancaster county as far back as 1770, and marked with the date of its production. Yellow ware was made at a still earlier date in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Ledger. A correspondent of the Cleveland Leader, who is journeying southward, notes that white men are seldom seen working in the fields. The negroes still do the work. The picturesque-, ness of plantation scenes has not al- together departed. Negro women were plowing, hoeing and planting, and the gay colors of their head dresses handkerchiefs chiefly and the laugh and joke of their swarthy fellows of the other sex, gave the im pression of another land as the cars .whirled by. TheNoith Amencan Indians bur ied with the corpse a kettle of pro visions, bow and nuov.s and mocca sins, with pieces of deer-skin and sinews of deer for the purpose of -patehiiii the moccasins.
