The Rise, or JEusenc Hale.
In the Maine Legislature of 1S62,
my seat-mate was a gray-haired,
good-looking man, every inch a
gentleman Mr. Grant, of Ellsworth
who treated me cordially from the
first, and between us there grew up
a lasting friendship, lie had been
in tho House before, and helped me
to get the "hang of the school
house." Afterwe becameacquainted,
Mr. Grant inquired about Eugene
Hale, who was a young man settled
at Ellsworth. I had known Eugene
from early boyhood, dividing his
time between working on the farm
and going to school, and I gave
him a good recommendation. How
could 1 do otherwise ? for no young
man ever stood fairer or better in
the community in which he wa3
raised. "When I met Eugene I told
him what I had said to Mr. Grant.
"Now, Eugene, I want von to fill
the bill," said 1. "I will" try," was
Eugene's reply. "When Eugene got
his foot into Congress there was no
power to get him out, until the
greenback craze knocked his trot
ters out from under him. Seth
Milliken, who represented Eugene's
old district, has not forgotten what
kicked Eugene, and when a bill was
before Congress lo make more
cighty-five-cent dollars, he voted
against it. Solon Chase, in Au
gusta Journal.
Spitz, the Policeman.
A family living in Brooklyn pos
sesses a dog of the Spitz variety,
which is blessed with a remarkable
degree of intelligence. Every night,
when the master of the house is
about to have the doors locked, he
dispatches the dog to the yard to
look up and bring in the cat. This
the clever Spitz never fails to do,
hunting in all possible nooks and
hiding places, and eventually re
turning in dignified triumph with
the cat limply dependant from his
mouth. The strangest part of the
story is, that the cat herself does
not appear in the least to mind this
rather summary cutting short of her
"evening out," but regards the per
formance as quite legitimate, and
settles herself meekly enough for a
night by the furnace fire. Boston
Courier.
