They are each a success in their particular locality which is about as high a meed of praiso as can be given them. Miss Walters' appearance at to night's concert promises a rare treat to lovers of music. As a vocalist Miss W. is said to have no superior in Portland. Cultivation and extended study have aided in bringing out the powers of a voice naturally beauti ful and flexible. Prof. Walters will be present to play his daughter's ac ac eompaniments: The launching of a boat is some thing so unusual over at Tacoma that when the tug Mogul was launched there last Saturday the bells rang at three o'clock in the morning, telling the Tacomaites to get up and go and see it, and they did. Fancy a crowd of people plunging along through the rain at three o'clock in the morning to see a boat launched! Woody Sprague, well and favorably known on the lower Columbia as a compe tent man, will have charge of the new tug. The Insurance Monitor says: "One of the most amusing in stanxes of the effects of 'in spection' (as applied by the repre sentative of a quasi-insurauce organi zation among merchants; which has lately come to our notice, is a request to a rich mercantile house to have their 'spittoons cleaned every day and filled with water to a depth of two inches.' This is 'inspection' with a vengeance. The next thing will probably be a request to use 'cotton' penwipers iustead of 'woolen,' so as to remove the danger of spontaneous combustionP What Has Oregon Done? There is still a pressing desire among the patrons of the ring to see Dempsey and Charley Mitchell pitted against each other. A telegram was sent on Sunday to Dempsey from this city, immediately after the result of the fight had been received, asking him if lie could meet Mitchell at once. The latter declared that he would ac cept a match with Dempsey if it were true that Le Blanche had been beaten by him, and if he would put up enough money. It is proposed to sign the articles and make all ar rangements here, and then charter a steamship and go to Oregon to fight The stakes may bo as high as $10,000 a side S. F. Chronicle, C. By a recent order of the interior department, saw mills iu Alaska are not permitted to cut logs and manu facture the same into lumber, except for the personal use of the proprie tors of said mills. The order is based on the fact that there are no land laws in that territory, and no person can acquire ownership to. real proper ty. Tue only persons who have title to real estate are a few Russians who owned land in Sitka at the time of the transfer of the territory to the United States. Of course the trans fer did not deprive them of the title to their land. Tho effect of the order has been to close the five saw mills in Alaska. The largest was located at Wrangel and had a cutting capacity of about 20,000 feet a day; another was near Sitka, with a capacity of 8,000 a day. The five mills had a total capacity of about 50,000 feet a day when in full operation. There is at present con siderable demand for lumber in Alaska, particularly at Juneau City. where a cargo of 500,000 feet; would uo Bnuppea up in aouuie-quiCK tune at from $25 to S30 per thousand. There is a considerable influx of pros pectors and miners into the country, wnich will cause an increased demand for lumber. The shipment of lumber there, at least for a time, would be ex ceedingly profitable. E. J. Jeffbet. Chairman Dem. State Central Com. C. J. Tbeschabp, Secretary. Pobtland, Oregon, March 20. 188C. PAID FOR THE CHRONOMETER. Here ia a story about old Jacob Aster that shows how wretched par simony and detestable meanness are sometimes rewarded : "One of Astor's best captains had made six voyages to China without a chronom eter, but just before sailing on his seventh voyage he suggested to Mr. Astor that it would be safer to have one. 'Get one,' said the millionaire. The captain did so, and entered its cost on the account current. When Astor's eye fell upon the item, he drew his pen through it. The cap tain expostulated. 'Damn it, man said Astor, 'I told you to get one, but I did not say I would pay for it.' The old seaman left Mr. Astor's em ployment at once and went down town, and before night was in com mand of as fine a ship as ever floated. In three days he set sail. At the same time Astor's ship, under a new commander, also set sail. The voyage to Hong Kong was very close, but the Captain, who, as he used to say. had 'discharged John Jacob Astor,' by keeping his men at the braces, took advantage of every breath of wind and won by three days. The ship was loaded in the shortest possible time, and be fore Astor's vessel, which had ar rived in the meantime, was half loaded, our captain weighed anchor, and with a full cargo of tea sailed for New York. He arrived in good time and .hoisted out the cargo, which was sold at auction on the spot. The market was thereby overstocked, and when Astor's ship arrived, the price had fallen. Some time afterward, as the Captain was walking down Broadway, he met Mr. Astor. 'How much did that chronometer cost you?' the latter asked. 'Six hundred dollars.' 'Well,' said Astor, 'that was cheap, it cost me $00,000.' " Proper Treatment for Coughs. That the reader may fully understand what constitutes a good Cough and Lung Syruu, we will say that Tar and Wild Cherry is the base of the best rem edies yet discovered.
