A. Million t&t a IK
In the old days when the lately
bankruntednenrvN.S"mith5fasone
of the bosom friends of William H.
Vanderbilt, an incident, occurred
which goes far to show plainly one
I or two of the personal characteristics
ot the railroad magnate. People
who bear in mind how Mr. Smith
was credited a couple of years ago
with having fleeced one of "Mr. Van
derbilt's sons out of some millions
in a stock speculation, and who re
call also the theory that was current
not long ago, that Smith owed his
late financial disaster to vengeance
wreaked upon him by that young
man's father people who remember
those things, remember too, that
the time was when Henry N.
Smith and William H. Vanderbilt
were almost inseparablecompanions.
What one enjoyed the other shared ;
where one went the other attended.
On nearly every pleasant afternoon
they were to be found at Fleetwood
Park enjoying the cream of life be
hind horseflesh that would have
driven all Arabdom mad with jeal
ousy. One dav Mr. Smith appeared
with a new horse spirited, hand
some, and fast beyond anything on
the track. Mr. "Vanderbilt's eye
was taken at once. His heart went
out in one big dash of affection for
that animal. He must have it.
Whatever the cost he would pay it
for such a treasure, and he made a
point-black demand on his friend at
once for a transfer of ownership.
Smith wouldn't l.isten to such talk.
He had bought a horse for his own
use ; it wasn't for sale. The animal
waB after his own heart; no money
would tempt him to pait with such a
jewel.
"I will give you $10,000 for him
just as he stands," said Mr. Vander
bilt. "Oh, no, yon won't," retorted Mr.
Smith. "Twice that sum wouldn't
buy that horse. I don't want to
sell, and don't intend to sell."
"I'll give you $50,000."
"Look here, William," quoth Mr.
Smith, "I tell you this animal's not
for sale. That settles it. I like him.
1 can afford to keep him, and I'm
going to do just that same thing.
So, William, be a gentleman and
shut up."
That ended the talk. Ilenrv N.
drove one way, William H. drove
another. They didn't address one
another during that afternoon. It
was veiy evident from his manner
that Mr Vanderbilt had been deeply
offended. So much iu love had he
fallen suddenly with the coveted
steed that it seemed to him only the
extremest meanness that would de
prive him of the prize. He was
amazed the next morning when he
went down to his stable. A strange
horse stood in one of his stalls. It
was the very animal that Henry N.
Smith had refused a small fortune
for less than twenty-four hours be
fore. He summoned his stableman,
and was told that Mr. Smith him
self had brought the horse over to
the stable, and left, saying merely :
"Tell Mr. Vanderbilt that the horse
is his, and that he is welcome to it."
The millionaire's delight was al
most boundless. Such good fortune
he had not even dared to dream
about. If he had Been little Billy
Vanderbilt in his first pair of red
topped, brass-toed, high boots he
could not have been one whit hap
pier. That evening 1-e met his
friend.
"Ah, Henry, I see you finally
came to my terins," he'ojaculated.
'Well, $50,000 is a pretty big price
for a horse, but you're welcome to
it, old fellow, you're welcome to it."
"Your $50,000 be blowed!" re
torted Mr. Henry N. Smith. "I
