A Washington financier, who is
well acquainted with Col. Lew Wash
ington, the teller of Lewis Johnson
& Co.'s bank, says that at the close
of business hours once he was poring
and perspiring over a long column
of figures on the balance sheet. The
sum total of the column should have
rcad$G.0P-0. Instead of that amount,
however, it showed a total of $0,990,
or $900 more than he could account
for. The vexatious mistake caused
the Colonel to scratch his head vig
orously and wonder where tlie excess
was in the agonizing column of fig
ures. While going oyer the column
carefully for the twentieth time he
discovered the error, and it was one
that would "hardly occur once in a
thousand years. One of the Colonel's
eyelashes had fallen on the balance
sliect and adheied to the frst 0 in the
line of figures $1,000. Philadelphia

The historian doesn't know where
this story had its actual origin, but
it was "told for true" on a recent
voyage to enliven the cempany: A
gentleman who had indulged quite
too freely, and hadn't had the discov
ery made for him in season to get a
carriage, was helped home by a
very good Samaritan, lie was very
grateful in an exhilarated way, and
asked his benefator's name.
"Mv name".'" said the gentleman.
"Oh, I'm St. Paul."
The inebriate steadied himself by
a final effort, and looked dreamily
at his departing friend.
"I shay !" said he, "Str Paul ! Did
you ever get an anshcr to that long
letter you wrote the Kphesians?"
