t) hc guUtj gtoran. ASTORIA. OEEGON: SATURDAY .LIARCII 'JO, 1SSG J03!K one claims to have found out that the bushel of corn which the distillery bujs for '30 cents is eventually sold to the drinkers for 40.50. There is only one linen mill now in operation in the United States, and it is making only the coarsest'kind of crash towelling. Tt has been losing money for years. Tun views of Miss Cleveland are telegraphed from "Washington regarding how low a lady can have the upper part of her gown cut. She. does -'not approve of any dress which show; the but." That settles it. Naturalise now count no less than 3,S70 different kinds of fishes in North American waters, of which r00 live in the rivers and lakes, and 550 kinds belong to the Pacific. Of the remainder, 105 dwell only in the deep waters of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, never appi caching the shore or the surface. T. 1). Curtis, of Syracuse, says there are 10,000,000 cows in the United States. The money value of their yearly product is $3,000 000,000. and the total cost of the land and plant necessary for their support, &:i.SOO,000,000. Last year 00,000,000 pounds of imitation butter weie sold from a capital of 2,000,000. This is hurting the dairy interests. Fi:iKrK of Gladstone endorse his measure proposing to expend 150,000,000 to buy out the land owner in Ireland. They cite the case of the civil war in the United States, and claim it would have been cheaper for the United States to have purchased the slaves before the rebellion than to have incurred the enormous debt that was heaped up, not counting the aw ful sacrifice of human life. Tin: committee on public lands has decided to report favorably to the house the bill which repeals the act for the sale of timber lands in California, Oregon, Nevada and "Washington territory. The intent of the bill is to prevent monopolies and foreign syndicates from gob bling up large tiacts of the public domain at nominal prices. Its ef fect, if passed, will be the cessa tion of several small weekly news papers in the northwest, and a damper on the starting of others. Mil. .Tame-, Partox, has kindly published a brochure telling news papers what they should do to succeed. The gentleman enter tains with most favor the idea of running "a morning newspaper with no advertisements in it." Try it Jim, try it: go ahead; and when you arc dead broke (about the second week) come this way and we will give you a qua:e meal; you'll need it. "Mr. Pa: ton was too smart to vote for Jiluine and helped beat that brainy man. but there are a good many things for him to still learn. Some imaginative and wonder fully learned German scholars tell us that every snowflake i-. inhab ited by happj' little beings, who begin their existence, hold their revels, live long lives of happiness and delight, die and are buried, all during the descent of the snow flake from the world of clouds to the solid land. These scholars also tell us that every square foot of air possesses from twelve to fifteen millions of more or less perfect little beings, and at every ordinary breath we destroy a niill ionj more or less, of these happy lives. The sigh of a healthy lover . -is supposed to swallow up about fourteen millions. The Pacific Mail steamship company directors held a meeting in New York last Thursday and voted to take freights at any rates, and to bring it hereafter all the way from Japan and China in their own vessels to New York, instead of giving consignments to trans continental roads from San Fran cisco. To-day the subsidy con tract between the Pacific Mail company and the transcontinental railroads expires. Then, it is said, the Pacific Mail people will play their trump card, offering to carry passengers from New York to San Francisco for $40 first-class. The Pacific Mail promise to reduce this 50 per cent, further, if need be. For. sometime it has been im plied in New York journals that tlie board of aldermen cf that city had been well paid for their votes on a bill granting Jacob Sharp the right to lay a street railway on Fifth avenue and Broadwa'. The difficulty was to prove it. Roscoe Conkling had Sharp subpo?nted, but the witness's name and nature were identical and nothing could be got out of him, his memoiy be ing lamentably defective, and his financial accounts much mixed. Now it appears that oi.e of the gang, Alderman Jaehne, has had his confidence abused by Inspect or Byrnes to whom he had confid ed the whole business; how he got $20,000 for his vote, how he had put the money so it couldn't be touched, etc. The best of it is he has implicated the others, given dates and amounts and furnished what may be enough to convict the whole gang. It was only a question ol time anyhow. These things .are always found out. Say- a Washington dispatch: There is but one honest and can didly expressed opinion here about the discussion pending in the sen ate over the difference between the majority of that body and the president, regarding the latter's refusal to furnish information of a public nature concerning the re moval of efficient and honest Re publican official, and that is that the position assumed by the ma jority of the senate is unimpeacha ble. People throughout the coun try would be surprised if they could know just how many Demo cratic senators and representatives say, in private, that the president has made a mistake, and that he cannot occupy the ground he has taken very long without ridicule. The most serious aspect in which the situation is viewed is that of the inclination of the president to drift away from the people and to become imperious, mysterious and haughty. The members of the Democratic party who are far-seeing readily discern that it will not do to indorse a move thai proposes exaltation of the office of presi dent of the United States to any higher degree than it has always been, and many of them believe that the president assume entire ly too much authority in the prem ises.
