It is predicted that, in the course of the next five years, the steel nail will have as completely supplanted the iron nail as the steel rail has its iron predecessor. Already one-half of the nails manufactured in "Wheeling arc made of steel, and the machinery and plant necessary for their manu facture are being set up in every nail center and at nearly every nail foundry. It is said that, under present conditions, steel nails can be made about ten cents per keg cheaper than those made of iron, even where the manufacture has to purchase his ingots. A French cIiemist has brought forward a new method of manufact uring gunpowder. The requisite quantity of sulphur, is dissolved in sulphide of carbonand this solution is then mixed with the carbon, which, instead of charcoal as in other modes of powder making is cotton or some other cellulose liber, which is reduced to an impalpable powder. To this mixture is finally added the proper quantity of a saturated solution of saltpetre. The compound is now evaporated and the "crystallization broken up, or it is evaporated in a vacuum. A very perfect incorporation of the several substances is thus secured. Pulverized steatite is coining into use, quite satisfactorily, as a finish or covering lor walls and ceilings. It is simply soapstone; it takes a high polish, is pearl gray in tint, presents the best possible surface for painting, either in oil or water color, and" will neither crack nor chip. It is claimed for it that it is a non-conductor and non-absorbent; that it can be "A ashed without injury ; nails can be driven into it without damage; when subject to heat, moisture, and chemical fumes, it gives no smell ; and it docs not turn yellow with age. It is thought to be specially adapted for hospitals, fac tories, cellars, markets, etc. An engineer in Berlin, German-, is the inventor of an improved con struction of steam engine, the pecul iar feature of which consists in the dead center point being obviated. In this arraugement, a block is se cured to the piston rod, this block being provided with a diagonal slot through which the crank pin passes. The slot has concaved edges facing each other, and is provided with a recess at each end. The slide valve is attached to a rod provided at the lower ends with tappets, against which the ends of the sliding block strike, thus reciprocating the slide valve rod. The levers from which the rods are suspended are provided with spring arms for giving the de sired degree of expansion. According to M. Fremy nitrogen exercises an imijortant influence on iron, and steel is due not to the presence of carbon alone, but to a combination of iron with nitrocar burets. Careful analysis, however, shows that there is no fixed relation between the properties of nitrogen and carbon in cither steel or iron, and also that the proportions of nitrogen are found to vary, while those of carbon are more constant; hence it has been supposed that the presence of the former is more or less accidental and unimportant. It is known that there are special "ores of steel" which naturally produce steel at a certain stage of lining, but which by still further fining pass into iron; again, this same iron gives steel of a superior quality for cementation. All metals, in" fact, undergo remarkable changes through the influence of exceedingly small proportions of various foreign substances. Copper is partly modi fied by the merest trace of oxygen, sulphur or lead, zinc or tin by only a few tenths of one per cent of iron, and gold is made brittle as antimony by one one-hundredth of one per cent of lead or bismuth. Dakota is the sole remaining quarter-section of Paradise in this West ern world. It is no uncommon thing for a whole Dakota family to sit on one end of a potato while" the other is roasting in the fire.
