c) ftttc gaUg gtetoviau. ASTORIA. OKEGON: SUNDAY MARCH 14. 1SSG THE WORTH OF PritPOSE. Xoi only shall vc think wiser and grander purposes when we mature them in advance, there is also a solidifying and invigorating power in long purpose, clearly de fined. You can generally tell from a man's gait whether lie has a purpose. Plan intensifies. Pur suance of a purpose makes our work solid and consecutive. Plan concentrates energies as a burning-glass does sunbeams. Shift lessness is mostly only another name for aimlessncss. Purpose directs energy, and purpose makes energy. When we see the target, we stretch the bow. Light in the eye is tension in the arm. "We can, because wc think we can. Power'is with a good deal of accu racy measured by purpose. A man may draw inspiration from the grandeur of his own aims, as a firefly shapes its flight by its own flashes. To-morrow will depend upon to-day, 3'et at the same time to-day in a sense depends upon to-morrow. "What to-morrow is in your purpose, to day will, to some extent, be in your act. In architecture, the spire is anticipated in the founda tion, and so determines the founda tion. It is very slovenly living that is not controlled by anticipa tion as well as by memory. "We cannot do to-morrow's woik to day, but we can have to-day's work shaped and buttressed by what we arc intending to do to morrow. In a lift; which has meaning in it, past and future sus tain each other. In an arch, the stones on this side are kept in place by the stones on the other. "When we step upon a bridge, Ave are upheld as well by the abut ment at the farther end as by that at the hither end. Wc have to acknowledge that ourplans do oft en get thwarted; but, if 3'ou will interpret the words carefully, there is not so much hazard in framing long purposes as short ones. The longer will be less endangered by opposing circumstances. It is something in this respect as it is with a long keel at sea, which will easily cut tiie waves by which a shorter craft would be foundered. Probably no idea has a firmer root in the minds of the people of America than that the senate has survived its usefulness and has departed from the sphere which it was intended to occupy. No one ever imagined that the time would come when represent atives of most of the gieat abuses afflicting the country would find, by means of purchased seats and insensate partyism, a lodgment in the senate where an absolute veto cculd be put upon any measure for the relief of the people, but that there is reason to believe that we have very nearly appro ched that era is not to be doubted. The senate, as now constituted, i an incubus on popular govern ment, and if it continues in its present tendencies it must soon be a question in this country whether the people rule or are rul:d. A republic modified by the veto of banded monopoly and corporate power in the senate will not long keep its Hands off the body which stands in the way of the popular will. No man in the house or senate fills the galleries as Logan does. It seems to make little difference what the subject upon which he is to speak, lhe fact that he is to make a speech fills the galleries. He seems to be a sort of perenni al statesman. "He looks just the same as he did twenty 3'ears ago," said an old habitue of the galleries. "I remember him away back to war times, and I don't see that he lias changed a particle. If rou go to the Army Museum in the war department you will see there a big picture of the generals of the war, each mounted on horseback.- Logan is in that picture, and he looks there just as he looks down there on the floor of the senate to-da." The educational bill as it passed the senate provides that for eight years after its passage there shall be annually appropriated from the treasury the following sums in aid of common school education in the states and territories and District of Columbia and Alaska: First year, $7,000,000; second year, 10,000,000; third year, 815,000, 000; fourth year $13,000,000; fifth year, $11,000,000; sixth year, 9, 000,000; seventh year, $7,000,000; eighth year, $5,000,000 -making $77,000,000. Congress reserves the right to alter or repeal the act. -- ... - The Portland World publishes Parn ell's pedigree, according to which he is "descended from a long line of English Kings reach ing back to the conquest." Well, he can't help that. "What's the use of bringing that up against him? The Prohibition Stat of the 11th inst., uses the term "Rum public rats." This style of logic would appear to indicate that our Salem contemporary has entered upon "the campaign." It is thought that a dozen shots from the new German bomb, charged with dynamite shells, would destro' the strongest forti fications in the world. FRffl L PARKER, FANCY R08EBIES!
