Vanderbilt was for the most part a struggle to preserve the colossal fort une heaped up by his father to pre vent it from evaporating, as all prop erly except lands tends everywhere to CVanorale. The tinift is enmiii". if it has not already come, when greater skill v. ill be required to keep large estates together than was needed to accumulate them, and this for the very simple reason that it is the nature of capital to wear out, the most permanent forms re quiring incessant care and renewal. Even such fixtures ns tlm "Now- Vnrfc Central Railroad are exposed to kill ing competition, and we nave seen the shares of this remarkable prop erty once reckoned the most desir able form of investment next to gov ernment bonds, reduced to a non dividend basis by a parallel road laid alongside of it within -thA short space of three years, an event which would have seemed utterly incredi ble to the elder Vanderbilt. A late president of the Erie railway, now deceased, on the occasion of a con ference with the commodore, in which a modus virendi was patched up between them, said : " JJow, commo dore, nothing can hurt the New York Central until somebody builds a narrow-gauge road on the other side of the Mohawk." The idea of a new double-track steel railway parallel ing the Central was beyond the con ception of either of the conferees. The commodore reflected for a mo ment and then exclaimed: "It is impossible; such a road will never be built." Eight years had not passed after this conversation took place when the West Shore road was in full operation, and it may be af firmed that the old commodore never had a task of such difficulty set be fore him as that which bis son grap pled when the West Shore problem conironteu mm. Mr. Yanderbilt's business career was checkered with likfi nrohlnms from the day when he inherited the bulk of his father's wealth to tho day of his own death. The very last hour and minute of his own life were absorbed by the ceaseless strug gle to hold on to property which was always slipping from him. The best investment he ever made was his large purchase of United States bonds. This required no care, no conferences with Garrett, or Gould, or Roberts, no surrender io the Nickel Platers, no fighting with the West Shore crowd. But "United States bonds come to an end event ually, and the inheritors of the Van derbilt wealth will have to struggle as he struggled, and as less wealthy persons struggle, to keep together the accumulations of the old commo dore. They will probably not be able to do so. The chances are largely against the preservation of the estate in a lump beyond one mere generation, although its bulk is sufficient to endow many rich fam ilies. The lumping of such masses of wealth by the process of settling all but a fraction on one member of a family will not prevent its eventual dissipation under the grinding power of competition and tho ceaseless rav ages of time. It is fortunate that the forces of nature work as they do to dis sipate large fortunes, since such ac cumulations as the Vanderbilt estate are the never- failing textfor commun ist spouters and tho starting-point of almost all attacks upon social order. How far the late William H. Van derbilt succeeded with the task he queathed to him by his father the public will not be likely to find out. Not even his executors will be able to answer the question for a long time to come, since death overtook him at a crisis in railway affairs. If he had died a few months earlier the West Shore settlement would in all probability have failed, and with it would have failed tho Pennsvlvania settlement, whatever that may be. The absence of a commanding bulk, capable of drawing lesser things to itself by sheer gravitation, would have left a multitude of conflicting forces in play to shatter themselves by useless collision. Whether all the wreckage has been collected to gether and properly stowed no man is wise cnougn to say. The man who could do most to make peace as well as to make war among railroad interests has passed away, the richest man in the world Tuesday, to-day nothing but a name, and as to this the most that can be said is that it was a fairly good name. Mr. Vanderbilt's benefactions were great, but not remarkable as measured by his wealth. He was virtuous, unostentatious, and kind-hearted, a good husband and father, a care ful trustee of the interests commit ted to his charge. He made no bad uses of his great wealth, nor did he ever exhibit the grasping, fighting, and crushing traits which marred the fame of tho old commodore. He endowed one great institution in New York with a princely estate, and he may have left other bequests in his will which shall preserve to him something better than the title of the richest man of his generation.
