An observer sends the following to Tid-Blti. A very retreating forehead which is low and shallow usually accompanies want of intellect. If slightly retreating, or what appears to be retreating from the fulness of the forms over the eyes, it signifies imagination, susceptibility, wit, and humor. Slow persons, with dull intellect, have very projecting foreheads. Perpendicular foreheads, rather high, and well rounded at the tem ples, rarely fail to go with solid un derstanding, powers of concentra tion, and lovo of study. A low, arched forehead which is full at the temples is indicative of sweetness and sensitiveness, and .when combined with great fulness over the eyes, gives an impressiona ble, idealistic nature. High, narrow, wholly unwrinkled foreheads, over which the skin is tightly drawn, show weakness of will power, and a lack of imagina tion or susceptibility. Foreheads not entirely projecting, but having knotty protuberances, give vigor of mind, and harsh, op pressive activity and perseverance. Persons possessing poetic, ardent, and sensitive natures not infre quently have a bine vein forming the letter " y " in an open, smooth, and low forehead. Perpendicular wrinkles between the eyebrows, when of equal lengths, signify anger, but if the wrinkles are of unequal lengths, they show deep thought and concen tration. xpenslve living. Washington life in any form is costly. It was not not so in the old times, or even as late as the seven ties, but at last the rich aud fashion able visitors have done their perfect work in this city, as in Paris and in Newport. One way to live in "Wash ington, of course, is to go to a hotel, and this way is riot so much costlier than others, after all. Another way is to buy or rent a house out right. But by far the larger part of the visiting contingent seek a suite of rooms, either furnished or unfur nished, as the case may be, with board. A suite of two or three rooms in a desirable location will cost a man and wife all the way from $80 to $150 a month. Very stylish apartments will run still higher. Board ranges from $20 to $50 or more a month for each indi vidual. There is one way of living peculiar to Washington, which is extensively used, but which cannot be conscientiously recommended. This is to take a suite without board, and have meals brought to one's room by a caterer. Mrs. Toodles Outdone. In the village cemetry stands a monument of economy which we think has no counterpart in the coun try. It is a tombstone, the present owner of which purchased it of another who had erected a large monument, and of course the second hand tombstone went cheap. Hav ing made the singular purchase the present owner, who, by the way, is the female head of the family, pro ceeded to have the inscription al tered so that it would do the duty she intended for it. As the result of her efforts the inscription now reads : "In the memory of C B , wife of R B . We are both here." The very unimportant part which the husband fills in his family, as indicated in this inscrip tion, is only exceeded in its absurd ity by the fact that both of the par ties the tombstone informs the reader lie there under the sod are alive and promise to be so for many years to come. As an economic, or rather a parsimonious, transaction, this deal in a second-hand tomb stone stands up head. Catskill Mail. An Aristocrat. At a recent State election in one of the Boston City precincts a digni fied colored gentleman was approach ing the ballot-box with a ticket in his hand. He was clad in a rusty coat, from which the suns and snows of many summers and winters had extracted the original color aud loft it a kind of ghastly cholera green, while through a rent in his well-wom derby hat his grizzled wool asserted itself. A Hiberian heeler, thinking he saw in the colored brother an easy victim, rushed forward, and, seizing him by the arm, ejaculated: "Say, yez ain't a-going' to vote for Sparkman ? Spooper's the man ; he's a frind of the people. Spark man is wan av thim aristocrats." The dusky gentleman, dignified as a lamp-postj shook his interrupter off, and ejaculating: " G'way dar, man, wid yer foolishness ; 1'ttan arittocrat myself; lived on de hill dese fifty years an' mo'," continued-fais stately march to the box and deposited his vote in triumph.
