James Wliitcomb Riley is a Hoosier poet, and is known as a writer of Hoosier dialect verse, as well as a reader of that peculiar literature. He was bom at Green field, Ind., brought up there, and, according to his" own story, is still tied to the apron strings of that motherly little town. Jnst wben bo was born, I know not, but guess at his age being between thirty-six and fort-, possibly a little vounger, not by any possibility older, and he is still unmarried. I have never seen bim, but like the boy who didn't sing, but bad a cousin who played on the flute, 1 have known persons who have seen him. He is described as slight, and not very tall, with long, thin hands, a pale complexion, large'and brilliant gray eyes, a prominent nose, thin lips and blonde hair. He isn't strictly conventional in manner or anything else, nor has he any aver sion to a man because he is rich. He is a fluent and interesting talker, and likes queer people. "Was taught sign painting as a trade, but didn't encourage his parents by special proficiency in the art or great de votion to it. He was thinking about poetry and writing poetry even when hanging in his basket paint ing lions and unicorns on hotel signs. He draws with some skill, and is "no slouch of a fiddler." Poetry, however, is his special talent, and the muses are brought to book with no uncertain hand when he gets after them. His poetry is always extremely rhymic, and often dramatic. He "depicts humble life touchingly. He has been charged with being imitative rather than creative not consciously so, but in this way : What he takes in is reflected back in something not similar exactly, but suggestive, like the echo of song, embellished by new refrains and sweeter notes. He belongs to a class of dialect poets who arc well-nigh peculiar to America, those who draw their in spiration from the good, strong com mon soil. They belong to the west ern United States rather than to the eastern. Bret Harte, Will Carlton and Mr. Riley himself are tho best specimens of this type. This imitative faculty stands him in good stead on the platform, where he depicts tiic queer characters of his poems with extraordinary art. "The Tree Toad" is one of his best known productions and recitations, and "Old-Fashioned Roses" another. I quote two "Roses:" stanzas from the 'They ain't no style about 'em, And thej're sort o pale and faded; Yit the doorway hero without "cm Would be lonesomer, and shaded With a good deal blacker shaddcr Than the morning- glories makes, And the sunshine would look sodJcr For their good old-fashioned sakes. "I like 'era, 'cause thei kind o' Sort o' make a. feller like 'em ! And I tell you when I And & Bunch out where the sun can strike 'em, It alius sets me tbinkin' Of the ones 'at used togrow And peek in through thi chinkin' Of the cabin, don't you know 7' Most of Mr. Riley's poems have been published in the Indianapolis Journal of late years. He makes his home in the Hoosier capital. Indiana is wealthy in poets. Mau rice Thompson, Benj. S. Parker, Mary II. Krout, Margaret Holmes, Ben. D. House and several others have made their mark. Mr. Riley can hold his own with any of them. In dialect poetry he is "ahead of them all. There is reason to be lieve that Mr. Riley will achieve greater renown in the future than in the past. L. T.
