How Uncle Mese Made a Few Dol lars with a Nickel. One of the most remarkable pecul iarities of the African race, devel oped since emancipation, is the fa cility with which they dropped into politics. The emancipated African takes to politics as naturally as a duck does to water. Not only do such representatives of the race aa Fred Douglass, Pinchback and oth ers understand how to press their elaims, but the most ignorant darkey can develop a keenness at a political bargain that disgusts the average white candidate, who is trying to obtain their votes without giving any adequate equivalent. Uncle Hoses, of Austin, Texas, who is president of the "Rising Sons of Liberty," and who also whitewashes fences, chops wood and preaches during the season of po litical inactivity, is taking a lively ' interest in the coming municipal i contest. At all events he does not j propose to work for any candidate unless he is properly paid in advance. He dropped into the office of a prominent candidate and was cor dially welcomed. The " Rising Sons of Liberty" poll fifty votes, are well disciplined and well organized. They vote solid when they do vote, and they vote as often as any other organization in Austin, or as often as they can with safety, hence there was a great deal of firmness and cordiality in the candidate's grip of the old man's "pickers and stealers," when the latter said: " I has come to you for some ad vice, kurnel, as I don't know nothin' about pollytics. "We cullud people ain't fit, nohow, to mix up in politics. We fiets led astray so much by dese political demigods and tricksters." " Why, Uncle Mose, I look upon you as one of the most intelligent and shrewdest statesmen of your race. I can learn from you," re plied the candidate blandly. The old man shook his "head dep recatingly and, producing a nickel, said : " Kurnel, how much, am a nickel WUUY" "Ha! ha! ha! very good. I have always said there is more genuine humor in the African race than in any other," replied the colonel with counterfeited hilarity. " But, Boss, how much is it wnff ? I'se not jokin'." "Five cents, I suppose." "Jess 'zamine dat ar coin, boss, an' lemme know hits cash value." The candidate took the coin, ex amined and returned it with the re mark that it was not worth anything, as it was a bad nickel. " But s'posin' I controls fifty votes ob de 'Rism' Sons ob Liberty? ' " A most worthy organization, but what has that to do with the nickel ? " " But s'pozin' I was ter tell dem cultured voters dat a prominent can didate bad cheated dis old niggah wid dat nickel?" "Who was it? " asked the candi date. " Was it my opponent? " "Nebber mind, boss; Psehuntin' for informashun now. S'posin' I was to tell em one ob the candidates had gub me dat lead nickel, instead ob a legal nickel? Does yer s'pose de cullered voters would vote for dat ar tricky canderdate? " The candidate looked worried and again asked the name of the fiendish candidate who had thus deceived so prominent and worthy a representa tive of the colored race. "As Noah said unto David, ' thou art da man,'" said Mose. "You gub m dat ar nickel in de change fur whitewashin' yore fence. I'se done woric fur all de odder candidates and you is de only one who has taken advantage ob de ignerence and simplicity ob de cullered race. De secret has been confined to my own breast, but hit ham struggling for freedom. Boss, how much did I hear you say dis lead nickel was wuff in a close election like dis heali one am gwine ter be? " The Caucasian statesman rested his massivo brow on his hand and thought and thought. He was wondering to what extent did un cle Mose propose to blackmail him. " Hit's gettin' late and dar am a buzness meetin' ob de 'Risin' Sons ob Liberty' dis ebenin," said undo Mose, picking up his hat The white statesman wrote in a bold, round hand $50 on a blotting pad and pushed it across the table. The old man took the pencil and changed the (50 to $100, remarking $100 was the lowest ngure lor which he would condone the treachery. "They will not support any other candidate'" inquired the candidate, " if I pay you this money? " "Does I look like a deceptive, on reliable niggah? Does I look like a fictitious culled man? No, sab. I'll stand by yer, and de fRisin' Sons' will rally round yer lik6 a brudder. Jess shell out de money and you is jess as good as elected already." The money was paid over, the can didate saying with a sigh and wink : "This is my contribution to estab lish a school in your ward. I want to see the colored men more intelli gent. You are liable to be deceived bydesigningwhitemen,uncle3Iose." " I hope dar am no more lead nick els in dis money." "I hope so, too." " We needs schools powerful bad, bekase we is ignorant and liable to be tuck in by designing bad men," said uncle Mose as he tied up the money in his handkerchief. " But now give me that nickel; I want to keep it as a kind of souvenir." "Heah It ajn.. kurnel. I hain't got no more use for hit. You is de las' candidate I has been ter see about dat ar nickel. I has done cleared more den $300 wid dat lead nickel. All de udder three candi dates has done paid up dar assess ments. Heah ! Heah !" And the old scoundrel went off into one of hit indescribable guffaws. When he got outside, however, he said to himself: " I knows dat all de candidates is in de habit ob palmin' off lead nick els on neah-sighted ole niggahs, and ef I don't look out dey will fool me. I tells yer de candidate, black or white, won't do to tie to, but all de green dey find in dis niggah's eye ain't gwine ter pay em ter harvest. What a blessin' dis heah right of suffrage am to de culled race."- Alex. E. Sweet, in New York Mer cury. A Writer's Work. A rapid penman can write 32 words in a minute. To do this he must draw his pen through the space of a rod, 1GK feet. In 40 minutes his pen travels a furlong. We make, on an average, 1G curves or turns of the pen in writing each word. Writing 30 words in a minute, we must make 480 turns in each minute ; in an hour, 28,000 ; in a day of only five hours, 144.000 : in a year of 300 such davs. 43,200,000. The man, therefore, who made 1,000,000 strokes with his pen was not at all remarkable. Many men newspaper writers, for instance make 4,0U0,000. Hero we have in the aggregate a mark 300 miles long to be traced on paper by such a writ er in a year.
