Why He Chanced His Mind and Saved Two J.ivss. A Baltimore correspondent of the New York Sun tells the follew: .g little story of the war: While the two armies under Gen. Grant nnd Gen. Lee were comforting each other helow Petersburg, Presi dent Jefferbon Davis became so ex hausted by overwork that he ds termined to rest for a few days. His steward was a worthy German named Eggling, iho before the war con ducted a. flourishing nursery business near Richmond. The President no tified Eggling of his purpose to take a rest, and directed that all visitors be excluded until further orders. Mr. Eggling and his assistants car ried out their instructions, and Mr. Davis serenely enjoyed his rest. One night at about 10 o'clock there was a strong pnll at the front door bell. Mr. Eggling answered the call, and on opening the door found stand ing outside a venerable gentleman who gave his name and said he wished to see the President on busi ness of great importance. Mr. Egg ling informed him that the President had retired, and could not possibly be seen until next morning. " But, my dear sir," said the caller, who gave his name as Mr. A., "it will be too late then. I wish to try to save the lives of two German de serters from the other side who are condemned lo be shot at sunrise as spies." The mention of the nativity of the doomed men touched a sympathetic cord in Mr. Eggling's heart, and he invited -Vlr. A. to a seat in tho hall. After hearing the main particulars of the arrest and sentence of the supposed spies, Mr. Eggling became interested in their deliverance. lie accordingly left Mr. A. in the hall, aud went" up-stairs to Mr. Davis' chamber. lie opened the door noise lessly, and moved on tiptoe across tho carpeted floor toward the bed, fearing that Mr. Davis would be asleep. The gas was burning dimly. Mr. Davis happened to bo awake, and asked his chamberlain what he wanted. "Mr. President," said Eggling, "I have been in your service a long time, and have never, as you know, solic ited any special favor from you." Mr. Davis admitted that. "I have one to ask now," resumed Eggling, "and I hope you will not refuse it." He then requested that Mr. A., who .was waiting in the hall down-stairs, be allowed to come up to the chamber to see him on urgent business, involving the' lives of two innocent soldiers. The President consented, and in a 3hoft time Mr. A., accompanied by Eggling, presented himself before the President, vho remajped in bed. - Af ter a short preliminary conversation, Mr. A. made known the object of his visit, which was to secure a reprieve for the two men until the charge against them could be further inves tigated. President Davis asked various questions, and, when informed that the sentence of the drum-head court "martial had" been approved by Gen. Lee, declared that he could not and would not interfere. Mr. A. became importunate, and Mr. Davis so far re lented as to agree to think over the matter for an hour, at the end of which Mr.'A. would receive his final decision. Mr. A. then withdrew, and at the appointed time returned to the chamber with Eggling. The Presi dent courteously informed his guest that he had considered the matter ful ly, and could not.change his decision. "The men must die, if Gen. Lee" has approved the sentence," said the President. " Is that your irrevocable conclu sion?" Mr. A. tremulously asked. "It is; I cannot reverse it," Mr. Davis replied. " Then," said Mr. A., " will you rise from your bed and unite with'me in prayer to Almighty God for the souls of the poor unfortunates who are to bs shot to death in the morn ing?" President Davis agreed to do this, and in a minute the three persons in the 100m were kneeling, and Mr. A. was fervently praying for the salva tion of the doomed Germans. "When "Amen" was Baid, Mr. Davis was about to rise, but he was prevented by Mr. A., who said: " Now, Mr. President, I want you to pray." Mr. Davis, however, insisted on risintr, and after doing so, said : "Mr. Eggling, bring me some paper and pen and ink." They were speedily produced, and in a few moments the desired reprieve was handed to Mr. A., who, after profusely thanking the President, hastened back to the Con federate camp, arriving .just in time Lto avert the execution. Wisdom of Aats. Sir John Lubbock, in a recent lect ure on ants, asserted that, to an ant, the coming out of tho chrysalis skin is a change of a very difficult, and, he thinks, of a very painful nature. He added that it was very interesting to see the old ant assisting the young ones to escape from the chrysalis. During the process the young ant is often injured and permanently crip pled. The intelligence of the antis such that Sir John Lubbock thinks that the difference between 4fceir mind and oursis not one"of an abso lute nature, but is altogether a ques tion of vdegree." Mr. Hanck's Discovery. George Hauck, the brewer "On-the-Hill," spent a week last summer at a hotel in Hunter, Green Co., rus ticating and "drinking in the sweet beauties of nature." One day, on his way to the hotel after along ram ble through brush and briar, he stopped at a neat-looking farm-house for the purpose of getting a fresh glass of milk. The kitchen door stood wide open. Mr. Hauck, after knocking, walked in. He saw no sien of life except a baby in a cradle, which was being rocked to and fro by some unseen power. A closer examination revealed the fact that a Btout cord was fastened to one of the rockers and run through a hole in one side of the room. Mr. Hauck resolved to follow up the cord and see what the other end of it was fastened to. The search led him to a small barn connected with the house. In it stood three cows, to the tails of which was tied the cord. It being fly time the animals kept up a constant switching with their tails, thus accounting for the rocking of the cradle in the kitchen. It was a novel means of putting the baby to sleep, but it worked well. Tho rest of the family were at work in a field about a quarter of a mile from the house. Kingston, N. Y., Freeman. " Is land high in Vermont? " asked a speculator of an old Green Mount ain farmer. "You just bet it is," was the reply; "if the trees wasn't bo stunted tho clouds could not get bv at all."
