Hotv Sealskins arc Prepared.
It should be premised that the seal
skins when taken from the animal
are simply salted and brought here
in barrels. The natural color of the
fur which underlines the coarse hair
or outside covering is a dirt cinna
v.ion, and instead of having the rich
velvety color, which its wearers take
so much delight in, is tangled and
curly. The first work done on the
raw skins is to lay them, fur down,
on semicircular beams and strip off
the fat with knives of different
shapes. Next they are stretched on
hoops and placed in the drying room.
Next comes the business of plucking
or " unbaring," as it is called in the
English factories, and this process is
kept a secret. The skins are then
washed clean, hooped and dried
again. Once more they are shaved,
then "butter-tanned," and then put
into a tramping-tub, when a man in
Adamic costume kneads them until
the whole mass of skins is impreg
nated with animal heat. The tan
nine and tram ninir arereoeatedacain
and again, until good leader has
been made. The cleaning machine
and the beating machine come next,
and then the skins are taken into the
chemical room, and the door locked
upon the operator. Then come the
smearing, the rubbing, the beating,
the smearing again, and so on until
the dark bronze or jet black color re
quired has been obtained. As may
be gathered from this brief outline,
the whole process involves a vast
amount of labor and skill. Each
skin is handled more than two hun
dred times, and at least two months
are required to bring the pelt to per
fection. Yesterday some skins were
exhibited that were ready for the
furrier's use, and in the soundness of
the leather and the luster of the fur
they certainly felt and looked to be
quite equal to the best examples of
what has so lon been an exclusively
London production.
