(?) Sftc gjatttj fjtftoviatt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY. FEBKUAltY 20. 1SSC TO BE INVESTIGATED The United States land office is taking steps to bring criminal and civil suits against the land-grabbers of California, Oregon and Washington territory. The Pa cific coast is the last district to be reached in indicting the men who have been ravaging the public and illegally taking up the public lands. In Nebraska, Dakota, New Mexico and Colorado a large num ber of indictments have been found against these grabbers. The first corporation that is to be brought to justice is the Sierra Lumber company of California. This organization has been carry ing on its operations principally in Tehama county. Peter Dean, who lives in San Francisco, is the pres ident of the company T. C. Turner is the contractor and "Waverley Stairley is the business manager. A minute account of their opera tions has been submitted to the department of justice. An ac curate description of each section of land on .which timber has been unlawfully cut has been furnished. The approximate number of trees hewn and the probable yield of each have been carefully estimated by the agents. The total number of pine trees cut is said to be GO, 000, furnishing 60,000,000 feet of lumber. This vast amount of wood is alleged to have been cut on land that belonged to the public domain. The Sierra Lumber company owns large tracts of lumber land, but no trees, it is charged, were cut on their own territory. The company evidently held that back until they had cut all the timber on the public land in the vicinity of their sawmills, flumes and roads. The agents report that there has been the grossest waste in cutting timber. The estimated value of the timber is 2.50 when cut, $4 at the mill and $20.10 when man ufactured, per 1,000. The stump age is estimated at 2.50. The depredations of this company were, it is alleged, carried on openly from 1879 to 1884, and these op erations are still going on, but in a more moderate manner. The land office has the names of many ' witnesses who will testify to the gigantic stealing that it is alleged has been carried on. The case hardly needs witnesses, for the government record shows that the sections upon which the operations have been made are still part of the public domain. The devasta ted lands, with thousands of re cently hewn trees, are evidence of what it is charged this company has done. The Sierra Lumber company has large amounts of lumber in various parts of Tehama county. The first steps to be tak en will be to attach that, and the second to enjoin the company from cutting any more lumber. The suit against the leadt-is of the Sierra Lumber company will be the first brought in California or on the Pacific coast. In .1 short time other suits will be brought. The land office is paying special attention now to the false entries of timber land in the redwood belt that stretches from Humboldt, Cal ifornia, down the coast. Commis sioner Sparks says that he had pos itive evidence that immense tracts of that fine timber land had bee.n fraudulently entered. The plan that has been adopted by the syndicates of timber land robbers is as fol fel fol eows: Men have been employed to enter a quarter-section of tim ber land and assign the certificate for it to the syndicate, which would provide the necessary witnesses to swear that it wasja bona fide en try, pay the 2.50 per acre for it and secure the title. Sparks says that the law is plain; that such schemes are criminal, and that the Jand can be entered only by men who take it only for themselves. The land may be sold, however, after the settler gets his title. The United States land office has proofs tiat these svndicates of robbers used bogus and fictitious names in entering the land. This same sjts tem of stealing timber lands has been carried on in Oregon and "Washington territory. .Commis sioner Sparks sayshat on all the timber land entries in California not more than five per cent have been honest and legitimate. The land office holds ready to be can celed fully 95 per cent of the tim ber land entries of the Pacific coast. Astoria Planing Mill HOLT & CO. Proprietors. Manufacturers of Mouldings, Sash Doors, .
