Greville 4n her Boston lecture, Saturday, on Ue con dition of women in Europe, "is "with out a home of his own. In London, a workman often lives in a hap hazard way, hiking his meals here and sleeping there. A Frenchman always has some place he can call his own. His "vifc makes it trulv a home. She is never sullen to him or the children, no matter how hard she may have to work. The children are at home every evening after 5 or G o'clock. They read the inevitable newspaper, which one can never get rid of, aloud to their father, and the home life is perfect. Free schools came from America twenty yeara ago. When a man is in business, he does all the buying and selling and outside work. His wile keeps his books. Sometimes a very rich man in commerce will know nothing whatever of his business accounts. But they are safe with his wife, and could not be in better hands. But she cannot even sign her name with out his leave, under the law. Often the wife supports the man entirely, while he lounges and drinks at the cabaret. Then, if she dies, he is like a baby and knows nothing of his affairs" Girls must be married. It is nothing dreadful if there is but one daughter. But when there are half a dozen, it is terrible. When a girl is seventeen or eighteen, her mother begins to look about for a husband, and everybody begins to dread her. They forget to send her invitations, andinvent excuses about cards hav ing been lost. Some one has been careless; she will be invited next time. When the son-in-law is se cured he is invited to dinner. He looks about to see if the linen, the silver, and the furniture are all right, lie criticises the cooking. He calls two or three times a week, and brings magnificent flowers. No mat ter how poor he is, the flowers are always splendid. lie expects the bride's portion to make up for it. This is a marriage de convenance, though what convenience I do not know very well. Perhaps the bride's portion may be the convenience in the young man's eyes. I do not ap prove of such marriages, though I admit that they generally turn out well. If a girl refuses the man her parents have provided in accordance with their own views, she can do nothing. She general!' yields when she gets to be twenty-one, and finds that the chances are against her get ting an' husband unlcs3 she takes the oneprovided. It is not the way I married, and I should not approve of it for any one I cared for. I mar ried myself. fApplause.J After the legal cerfimonics and the marriage at the mairie, comes the wedding in church. When that is over the young pair do not go home; that would be highly improper. They go to some hotel, where a magnificent breakfast is provided. If you are ever so fortunate as to be invited to such a feast I advise you to eat a good breakfast before you go and a good dinner after it. For there is nothing to eat; all is show. But the bride has the consolation of knowing that her dress is very much hand somer than the dress of her very best friend, who was married a few weeks ago; and what greater happiness can any woman desire? In fact it is far too nice to be worn again. After the wedding they settle down. The husband goes to his business; the wife has her reception day. Her 'eolation' consists of cakes and Mal aga wine from therocer's shop over the way. The guests know too much to taste tho stale cake or sour wine. So one bottle of wine and a few cakes serve all winter. She has had her 'day,' and it matters not how she looks on all the other days. No one sees her, but she has made a great show. When this period is past, the couple irenerally settle down much better than could have been expected, and are reasonably happy together. They have no idea that there can be a better wav of marrying." Furniture and Upholstering, Mattresses Made and Repaired. Paper Hanging. Carpets Sowoa and Laid. Furniture Sold on Commission.
