An -c 'iitiou will bj sont from Melbourne to observe it. Mounds rcsein .linjr tiio.se of Ohio exist near Kal.m, China, and i.i one has been found a stone h.itciu-t which is said to be indistinguishable from those shown as the work of the "mound-builders'" of ancint Amer ica. The membership of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which was doubled at the annual meeting in Boston in 1830, has rapidly increased since, and now reaches 2,347. Its members are drawn from no less than 597 places. The presence of even l-39,000th of a pound of antimony in a pound of melted lead increases the rapidity with which the lead oxidizes and burns, and lead containing more than 11,400th of its weight of copper has been found to be unfit for the manu facture of white lead. A Weather Prophet. It is possible, according to French authority, to foretell the weather, sometimes ten or twenty hours in advance, by ob serving and comparing the sounds emitted by a telephone connected by leads with two iron bars stuck into the ground a few yards apart. In case of a thunderstorm especially, a noise like that of shriveling leaves" in creases until a flash of lightning oc curs, when the sound resembles that of ram or had falling on grass. Spider Sense. A German entomol ogist, F. Dahl, claims that spiders have perfect sight only at very short distances. Their sense of touch is consequently remarkably well devel oped, enabling them to locate dis turbances in their web. Their smell is so good that they can distinguish odors, and their hearing is excellent. Some of them show a remarkable in stinct in building their webs even their iirst in perfect geometrical form. A reflective power is evinced by their refusal of kinds of tough in sects which have once been attacked unsuccessfully. What Becomes of Arctic Animals? It has been a source of much sur prise to Prof. Nordenskjold that, dur ing his numerous expeditions within the Arctic circle, in regions where animal life is abundant, he has found only a very few remains of animals which died a natural death. No one has any idea of what becomes of the bodies of such animals, and it is in deed very strange, as he remarks, that on Spitzbergen it is easier to find bones of a gigantic lizard of remote geological time than those of a "self dead" seal, walrus or bird. The same is also true of some places not so far north. Errors Corrected. Itheem, of the Smithsonian Institute, has contra dicted much of the popular belief con cerning snakes. The venemous hoop snake, which takes its tail in its mouth and rolls along like a hoop, and the blow snake, the breath of which is deadly, exist only in imag ination. The idea that serpents sting with the tongue is erroneous. An im pression prevails that the number of poisonous snakes is great, but in North America there are but three species the rattlesnake, the copper head or moccasin, and the coral. Snakes do not jump ; they reach sud denly forward jierhaps half the length of their bodies. Ancient Philosophers on Earth quakes. Anaxagoras, the Iihodian, held that earthquakes are nothing but a sort of cosmic flatulence winds which have strayed into caverns where they cannot find an outlet. Aristotle ascribed them to vapors generated by the infiltration of water through the fissures of a rocky sea bottom ; and Pliny, to the pressure of air in deep caves, confined and re acting against the collapse of incum bent rock-strata. But the most in genious explanation was offered by St. Thomas of Aquinas, who suggest ed that earthquakes may be caused by the struggles of defunct misbeliev ers trying to escape (by a simultan eous stampede, perhaps) from a pit of torment Cure For Piles. Piles are frequently preceded by a sense of weight in the back, loins and lower part of the abdomen, causing the patient to suppose lie has some effection of the kidneys or neighboring organs At times, symptoms of indigestion are present, flatulency, uneasiness of the stomach, etc. A moisture like perspir ation, producing a very disagreeaole itching, after getting warm, is a com in on attendant.
