In the First Colored Baptist Church 114 persons have been baptized since January 1. Chaplain McCabe wants the Metho dists to raise a million dollars for missions this year. Mount Vernon Place Methodist rhurch originally cost, including the ground, $350,000. The semi-annual meeting of the bishops of the M. E. Church will be held at St. Louis in May next. An Irish correspondent of The Watchman reports the" Baptist churches of Ireland as dying out. Fifteen people were recently re ceived into the communion of the New "Windsor Presbyterian Church. There are upwards of 10,000 Pro lestant children attending Catholic educational institutions in the United States. The "Career and "Works of James Russell Lowell" was recently the theme of a Sunday evening discourse by a Brooklyn Unitarian minister. Dr. John Hall, of New York, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at the commencement of "Washington and Lee University, Yirgiria, next Tuly. A Baltimore correspondent of tho Chicago Standard says there are more Methodists to the square mile in Bal timore than anywhere else probably in the world. Bishop Ireland says that from pros- ant indications the trustees of the pro posed American Catholic University will receive about $1,000,000 on their Grst call, including in this sum Miss Caldwell's magnificent gift. A clergyman in Boston a man svell versed in the Bible, devout, earnest, a good worker and a fair preacher is a settled pastor over a church which pays him only $12 a week, and that is his whole salary. Boston Traveller. Professor "Woodrow, recently re moved from his chair of instruction in theColumbia (S. C.) Theological Seminary, has demanded a trial on the charge of heresy, which has been indirectly made, and his request is to be granted. The Baltimore Methodist says the reason that city ministers are unwill ing to exchange places with those in the country is that their children will not have such good advantages of education. As to the city ministers who have no children, the Methodist is silent. Rev. Dr. Hepburn, of the Presby terian mission in Japan, doubts whether a foreign missionary will be needed in that country fifteen or or twenty years from now. He says : "If all the foreign missionaries were expelled to-morrow, the work would be carried on by the natives." The Baltimore correspondent of the Philadelphia Church says: In the Church of the Ascension, Kev. Dr. Fair rector, for the purpose of avoiding appeals for special objects, has introduced the "envelope plan" with marked success. It is probable it will realize $7,000 per annum. "Oh ! Mr. S.," said a young lady at a church fair, "I want your help for a moment. I have.sold a.tidy for $15 that cost fifteen cents, and I want you to tell me what percentage this is." "A transaction of that kind, my dear Miss B.," said Mr. S., who is a lawyer, "gets out of percentage, and into larceny." This summer six Indian boys of the Gatholic missions of the Rocky Mountains will be taken to Ireland to be educated for tho priesthood in the missionary, college established near Limerick. Should the young men persevere and receive holy or ders, they will return to their native "est to labor among those of their own race. A pastor says that he hired a buggy and drove about eighteen miles to visit two of his members who .had not been to church for nine months, and when, after a good many inquiries and a long search, he found their residence, ho was edified by the an nouncement that they had gone to town to attend Barnum's circus.
