3J ?'!tc Jiattg gistodaw, ASTORIA. OREGON: suxday Fi:r.i:r.u:y 7. isr, D. ,T. Iu,'aHs has Imperial Pekin Jack eggs for sale. The Washington territory legisla ture adjourned last I rulay night. The Oregon Improvement company give 2,2i0 pounds or coal for a ton. The regular meeting of the British Benevolent Society will be held at 7:30;ext Tuesday evening. From Ihvaco it is reported that there will be as many fish traps in the bay this year as there v,ere last. A special meeting of the Astoria Musical Society will be held in Pyth ian Hall Monday evening, Feb. 8th, at 8 o'clock. Multnomah county has been sup plied with the precinct registers for 35 cents apiece. Quite a drop from S3, the first price asked. Very little was moving on land or water yesterday. Heavy rain fell the greater part of the day and the wind blew in fitful squalls from the south. The Idaho failed to show up yes terday. It is said that Messrs. Hun ter and Allison will be captain and chief engineer, respectively on this trip. The cape telegraph line was down again yesterday afternoon. It runs part of the way through an exposed country, and is hard to keep up in winter. "Bringing in the Sheaves," "We are Marching to Our Home" and "Bright Caanan," the hymns that are so popular at the tabernacle in Portland, will be sung at the Melhod ist church this evening. There is no threshing machine in this section of the state and oats raisers think it would be a good idea to get one as a sort of joint stock concern. The flail and "tramping out" used to be good in ancient Egypt, but in the nineteenth century it is too slow. Clatsop county may be the proud owner of a threshing machine next summer. The Washington territory legisla ture has passed a sensible law pre scribing a form for deeds, mortgages, etc. The new form for a warranty deed contains thirty words and is just as good and as binding as it it contained 3,000. Some of our Oregon deeds appear as if written with a de sire to find out how many pages can be covered with redundancy. There is a good deal of humbug about hav ing to pay for recording half a dozen pages to show the transfer of a piece of property in this and other Oregon counties. PERSONAL. Col. Uaslied Wild DucIch. Take the remains of cold roast wild duck that have been underdone and cut them into small pieces. Dredge these well with flour and put them into a stow pan with a gill of water in which has been dissolved half a teaspoonful of fluid beef, adding a tumbler of port wine, a tablespoon fnl of mushroom catsup, a tablespoon ful of Worcestershire sauce, and season ing to taste with salt and cayenne. Set the stewpan where the contents may simmer gently, but not boil, for a quarter of au hour. Then take out the pieces and place them upon nicely browned toast. Boil and skim tho sauce to the consistency of cream, pour it over the whole and servo at once. How About Garland and Lamar? It is bad enough for the adminis tration to have to continue so many "rascals" in office, the remains of the Republican wreck, without adhering to the policy of the Republican party in the treasury department. THE NEW LTGIIT HOUSE TENDER. The Manzanita returned from the buoy depot yesterday, bringing the Shnbrick in tow, and having some buoy anchors, chains, etc., for trans fer. Both vessels were alongside the Mam street wharf, and furnished cousiderable comment for tho crowd that collected to see the two tenders. The Manzanita is a wooden- vessel built by Ramsaj in Baltimore in 1879. This Ramsay was the chief engineer on board the Merrimac when that famous ram came around and sunk the American ships Cum berland and Congress in Hampton Roads off the Virginia coast April 8th and 9th, 1862. She is a propellor, is very strongly put logeiner, oemg considered in every way seawortuy and secure. She is 450 tons burthen, is 152 feet between perpendiculars, 26 feet breadth of beam, 11 feet 8 in. depth of hold, and draws about 10 feet 9 inches aft. Her rate of speed is set at ten knots, though she usually bowls along at eleven and twelve and can make fifteen without extraordi nary effort When the Madrona ar rived off San Francisco the bar was too rough to cross in and the Man zanita went out to her; after the sea bad smoothed down a little the new steamer started to show the Manzani ta a little speed, but the latter walked away from her and showed her the way in inside the heads. The Manzanita cost S74.000 when she was built, going on seven years ago and is well supplied with machin ery and essential requisites. Her ma chinery was thoroughly overhauled before coming up and put in good condition, though it $4,000 or $5,000 were spent in refitting painting, fur niture and introducing a few more conveniences aboard, the money would be well spent. However, she is a big improvement on the Shu brick and is far better adapted to the wants of tho district, some say better than the Madrona would have been, though we all expected the Madrona and naturally felt a little disap pointed when wo didn't get her. The ManzanitcPs enrines are verti cal componnd, Baltimore built, 36x22 cylinder, 32 inch stroke; she has a surface condenser with a capacity of 1,IW square feet; the diameter of the screw is "J feet, M inches; pitch, lo feet, 6 inches, maximum number of revolutions per minute, 80 size of shaft, S4 inches. The boilers are two in number, one mam and one donkey; tho niaiu is 9 feet, 10 inches front, with a maximum pressure of 60 lbs; the diameter of tho smoko stack is 48 inches; height, 28 feet; was built in 18S5. and will con sume an average of 700 lbs of coal per hour in moderate steaming; there are two coal bunkers with a capacity of 76 tons. JOE BLACKBURN'S LOST TUNITY. OPPOR- A funny anecdote connected with the Hon. Joe Blackburn's first race for congress was told to me the other day. Joe happened to be passing through Osventon, the county seat of Owen county, on the occasion of the hanging of a noted criminal. As a hanging is a rather exceptional episode in the state of Kentucky, the honorable Joe concluded he would stop over a few hours and witness the event The gallows was erected in the public square, so that no citi zen, however humble, should lose the opportunity of witnessing the un usual spectacle. It was, in fact, a gala day, such as the history of Owen ton has seldom recorded The sheriff, with true Kentucky hospitali ty, invited Blackburn, as one of the distinguished guests present, to oc cupy a seat on the gallows. Black burn did so. After the preliminaries had been arranged, the sheriff looked at his watch and discovered that it was not quite 12 o'clock, the hour fixed for the execution. Turning to the prisoner, he said: "You have ten minutes yet to live. Is there anything you desire to say in the meantime?" The prisoner sullenly replied there was not. At this instant Blackburn sprang from his seat, and advancing to the edge of the scaffold, said: "If the gentleman will allow mo his remaining ten minutes I will be glad to announce myself a caudidate for your suffrages. If elected to con gress " At this point tho prisoner inter jected: "Say, you! is your name Joe Blackburn?" "Yes, sir," responded Blackburn, politely. Turning to the sheriff, the prisoner said: "We won't stand on a few min utes more or les3 when the alterna tive i3 presented of death on one hand or listening to one of Joe Black burn's long-winded speeches on the other. Flip the .trap and let me go." The good-natured sheriff obligingly "flipped the trap," and the next in stant the desperado swung into eter nity, while Blackburn clambered down the gallows, exclaiming as he went that he had lost the greatest op portunity of his life. A tree recently felled on Mr. Wick's place measured 405 feet from butt to "uppermost bough," it re taine'd a thickness of 14 feet in diam eter for upwards of 100 feet in bight. Such mighty monarchs of the woods are fast disappearing berore the pio neers' rstudy stroke. Strangers visiting ns are unanim ous in proclaiming Nehalem, as to fine ranches and fertile soil, to be second to no settlement on the coast. With a railroad through to Astoria, in tho near future, our prosperity is assured. We can spare an abun dance of good coal and timber, which should lend an inducement to such an undertaking. A school house is under construc tion in district No. 19. Mr. Lundberg succeeded in killing four fine deer wilh his little rifle one day last week. Mr. Fisher also downed an equal number. Game has been rather scarce the present season in this locality. A tourist traveling down the Ne halem valley, undertook in a canoe to navigate the river in its present high state, he was warned against the dan gers of such an undertaking, but the temptation of having a pleasant ride overruled, and everything went well for a few miles, when suddenly he was seized by a limb extendiug from a tree on the bank, and pitched head long into the mad current, but being a good swimmer he succeeded by powerful exertion to get out of the whirlpool and reached shore very much exhausted. He is now willing to admit that a little knowledge of navigation is not amiss even on a small stream. Occasionally runaway sailors. are seen tramping through to Portland and the Sound. Their apparel as well as the stories they relate in re gard to the treatment received on vessels are, in most cases, very pitiful and reminds us of the truthful stan za: "Sinn's inhumanity to man Makes coantlos3 millions mourn." How a Double Game Is Played on Office Seekers. Washington, February 5. Tho ex tent to which political "hypocrisv is carried by alleged statesmen iu Wash ington is almost beyond belief. Pressnro for places on the staffs of the various house officers has been tremendous, but nothing can justify the tricks resorted to by some mem bers to deceive constituents. The other day a southern congressman hurried into the room of the house oflicers and whispered: "Don't give this fellow anything." Behind the member, unable to keep at his heels by reason o the rapid gait, stumped a ons-legged man with an expectant look on his face. "Ah, Canne!!' said the congress man impressively to the house officer, waving the cripple forward, "let me present to you Majah Blank. I want to say to you, sah, that jtfajah Blank, sah, fought on our side. He was a gallant soldier, sah. If you can do anything for him, sah, I assure yon it will be deserved, and yon will confer a personal favor on me, sah." So saying, the member referred to a pressing engagement and hurried off, leaving the poor ex-confederate with hopes high raised to be disposed of with chilling politeness by the house officer. This is a true story of low-lived statesmanship. Another illustration is found in a note received by one of these house officers from a southern senator. "Dear Blank," the senator writes, there are forty or fifty men who want places under you and are bothering me to recommend them. I am going to endorse all of them, but don't give one of them anything on my account." Kiicltlcii's Arnica Salve. The Best ai.ve i n the world for Cuts, Bruise$,Sore3,Ulcers,SaltIlheuui, Fever Sores.
