Pigs have been known to live to
the age of twenty, and tho rhinoceros
to twenty-nine. A horse has been
known to live to the age of sixty-two,
but averages twenty-five to thirty.
Camels sometimes live to the age of
one hundred; stags are very long
lived; bheep seldom exceed the age
of ten : cows live about fifteen years.

The Clinical Record says that after
the chief enpinfr nf thn ) ..-
partraent of Philadelphia pointed out
the poor quality of the water and the
glaring defects in its supply, he was
requested by the authorities "to re

interest in it."
The present Duke of Bedford, head
of the house of Russell, who is held
up in a rather unpleasant form just
now by the London press, is a con
firmed cynic. There i3 no member
of London society that savs so many
biting mots or who imp'resses one
with a deeper notion of his disbelief
in human nature generally.
"Swell" funerals are going out of
style in the larger cities, and the
tendency now is in tho direction of
strict simplicity and privacy. Good
authority reports for New York that
aimost an iunerat services are held
from the houses of the deceased per
sons. A few of the personal friends
are invited, and the crowd is given
to understand that it is not wanted.
liie King and Queen of Saxony
are now traveling incognito through
Switzerland andltaly. The Queen
is a florid, dark-eyed, dark-haired
woman,stout and comely.and middle
aged. The King is a fine looking
man. withgray hair and whiskers.
All the Katherines of England are
contributing to a fund to place a
memorial of brass on Queen Kath
erine's tomb, in Peterborough Ca
thedral, that poor old ladv, though
immortalized by William Shake
speare, never having had a suitable
monument.
Miss Charlotte M. Younge, whose
latest novel bears the title "The Two
Sides of tho Shield," is now in her
sixty-third year, having been born in
Otterbourn, Hants, in 1823. She be
gan to write in 1854, and has kept at
it so industriously that her books of
all kinds now number 120 titles, or
something like four hundred vol
umes. A ladies' club patterned upon the
Union, is soon to be organized in
-if Yrk Cky. Its membership
TOH be composed of the most promi
nent women in the society of the
metropolis. The names of Mrs. Riv
ers, Mrs William Astor, Mrs. John
Jacob Astor, and Mrs. Adrian Iselin
have already been suggested for
President, and the Misses Hewitt and
Miss Marbury will almost certainly
be among the governesses. It goes
without saving no men are to be ad
mitted to the club, either as mem
bers or as visitors. The servants aie
all to be women, and the stewardess
will be a person of long experience
as housekeeper. As might be ex
pected, many of the husbands of
present and prospective members do
not favor the new club. Several who
do not happen to be club members
in particular, frown severely upon it,
and say they do not see why their
wives should join a club when their
husbands have not done so. One
bright woman is said to have givec
as her excuse for not jeining: "I
have married a husband, and there
fore I cannot come."

The people of DeKalb County,
Tenn., drive a nice little trade in

Caney Fork River. A number of
valuable specimens have been found
of late. A few years ago a specimen
which is said to have brought $300 in
New York, was found in this river
