The Judge used to be an expert per former of jigs on the fiddle, but since his boyhood has not devoted much time to the violin. He was born and raised in poverty, and the story of his life is almost a romance. His father vas the fiddler of the vil lage, a nomadic and jovial soul. Said an old neighbor the other day : " When I went to muster, sixty years ago, I used to see the Judge and his father playing the fiddle for dances at sixpence per tune. This was the regular price in those days. None of the dancers ever supposed that their little fiddler would become a Judge of the Supreme Court." Lewistown (Me.) Thalcs of Miletus taught the globular form of the earth, the five zones, some of the principal circles of the sphere, the opacity of the moon, and the true causes of lunar eclipses, and predicted an eclipse. About 50Gu. c, Pythagoras demon strated, from the varying altitudes of the stars by change of place, that the earth must be round ; that there might be antipodes on the opposite part of the globe; that Venus was the morning and evening star; that the universe consisted of twelve spheres the sphere of the earth, of the water, of the air, of fire, of the moon, of the sun, of Venus, of Mer cury, of Mars, of Jupiter, of Saturn, and of the stars. In 2S0 ii. c, Aris tarchus, of Samo.s, maintaine'd that the earth turned on its own axis and revolved about the sun, which doc trine was regarded by his contempo raries as so absurd that he nearly lost his life.
