Scientific Miscellany. A German chemist, J. G. Otto, finds arterial blood to contain more sugar than the blood of the veins. Bromine exposed in a closed room over nigbt is said to effectually de stroy all insect3 in disease cerms. The American Indians are found by Matthews to have a knowledge of animals and plants incomparably superior to that of the average white man, or of the white man who has not made zoology or botany a sub ject of study. The director oT the Buda-Pesth bureau of statistics, Josef Korosi, has calculated from carefully pre pared mortality tables that the pos session of wealth, and the resulting exemption from privation, lengthens the average life nearly ten years. A colossal poplar in the Botanical Gardens at Dijon measures 130 feet in height, 46 feet in circumference near "the earth, and 21 feet in circumference at 16 feet above the earth. Dr. Lavelle finds reason for believing that it is at least 500 years old. Oleoze, the favorite German prep aration for disguising the taste oi most unpleasant remedied, is said to have this compesition: One part each of the oils of lavender, cloves, cin namon, thyme, citron, mace, and orange flowers, three parts of balsam of Peru, and 240 parts of spirits. Tromholt indorses the view, said to have been first advanced by "Wey precht, that the zone in which the aurora borealis appears is changing periodically, being farthest south at the equinoxes and farthest north at the solstices. Observations made in many places seem to prove the correctness of the theory. Speaking upon the water supply of ancient Roman towns, Prof. W. H. Corfield has presented the Sanitary Institute of Great Britain a strong argument against attempts to purify water that has once become foul, commending the wisdom of the Ko mans in drawing the water for their towns from unquestionably pure sources. In England is supported to some extent the theory that a direct re lationship exists between scarlet fever and diphtheria; and at a recent meet ing of a British medical association facts were presented which tended to show that scarlet fever had been con tracted from diphtheria patients, and diphtheria from scarlet fever pa tients. Scientific Societies. The British Association for the advancement of science was organized in 1831; the American Association, in 1848; and the French Association, in 1872. The members of each of these bod ies include nearly every scientific man of its respective country, and much real progress undoubtedly re sults from .the interchange of ideas at the annual meetings of the societies. Tiie Telepiioxk in Medicine. A recent interesting exhibition of ap paratus in Paris by Dr. Boudet, in cluded modifications of the telephone adapting the instrument to a variety of medical uses. In one form the pulsations of blood vessels and all sorts of internal operations were very strikingly made audible, thi observer being able to hear at will the movements in any part of tho body. Another telephbnieappliance detected the presence of stones in the bladder, and even made known their character when present. Dr. Boudet also employs the telephone as a measuring instrument for accu rately estimating the nervous and muscular excitement in the different phases of a disease.
