ASTORIA. OREGON:
JJI)N IISDAY F EimUAKY 3. 1SSG
Sixt i: October, 1SS3, Oregon is
shipping more wheat than California.
Ix the English markets wheat is
.lower now than at any time in the
last century.
The Nevada legislators gleeful
ly doscy the opening of the sena
torial contest in the Silver state.
The sack is in sight and official
virtue is;quoted high.
And so Queen Victoria, much
as she dislikes Gladstone, has been
obliged to send for the "grand old
man" to make a cabinet for Eng
land, lie is to-da-, virtually, king
of Great Britain, and rules that
country, not by descent, but by
prescriptive right of genius.
A max- who claims to know
Gould well says that his detectives
c '.t him more than all the clerks
in his New York offices. He nev-
r makes a lournev. even the
shortest nowadays without first
sending his scouts on ahead to dis
cover if any obstacles are likely to
he encountered.
Accokdixg to the Philadelphia
correspondent of the Times about
-40,000,000 S,000,000 is annu
ally .ent by the Irish in America
to their relatives in Ireland, prin
cipally at Christmas. This year
their united amount was sufficient
to affect the exchanges between
America and Europe.
Tin: Philadelphia Times insists
that "the editor of a newspaper
who i-; ready to accept public po
sition thereby confesses his unfit
ness for journalism.5" This is
probably true; and yet it furnishes
no reason why all editors should
resolutely decline such positions.
It frequently happens that a man
who persists in trying to be an
editor when nature never intended
him for a career of that kind,
might do fairly well as an attor
ne', for instance.
Tin: whaling fleet in Alaskan
waters last ear numbered forty
sailing vessels and eight steamers,
with a total tonnage of 14,2G2
tons. One hundred and twenty
six whales had been taken at latest
accounts. In the fishing 'business
n the north Pacific last summer,
fourteen trips were made from
San Francisco by twelve vessels,
aggregating 2,500 tons. The fish
taken in Alaskan waters numbered
922,000. The value of the catch
was about lo0,000. This indus
try lias been successfully prosecut
ed hince lSGi.
Tin: Daily Stockholder calls
attention to the fact that since the
agreement of 18S0 with the Pa
cific Mail Steamship company, the
amount paid as subsidy by the
Union aud Central Pacific loads
has been 7,030,000, an average
of about 1,250,000 yearly equal
to J2.10 per cent of the company's
stocks. During the same period
the company has paid dividends
equal to over 38 per cent of its
capital stock, or 1,750,000 in all.
The SlortchoMa' asks the ques ques
teon: "What would become of the
stock if the subsidy of $83,000 per
month was withdrawn?
TiiEiu: are two extremes in na
tional life liberalism and conserv
atism. There are times when a
nation feels the need of the one,
times when she leels the need of
the other. Therefore there will
always be the need of parties, and
there should always be the need.
It is the same with charaeinr.
There are times when it craves
richness, times when it needs
strength; and on every one rests
the responsibilit' ol preserving
the golden mean. Still, in prac
tice, this is difficult; it islike walk
ing a tight-rope. One is always
leaning to one side or the other,
balancing to preserve the equilibrium.
daughter on the part of her father.
The evidence is not all in, but from
what is telegraphed and said
it would appear as though
""Whackeen" was more sinned
against than sinning. The girl is
evidently destitute of moral prin
ciple, and her father has proved
his manly qualities on similar oc
casions in the past. Years ago
his divorced wife went around the
country lecturing and on every
occasion holding her former hus
band up to ridicule and scorn.
Yet when she lay friendless and
dying he sought her out and kindly
ministered to her last wants. Per
haps the Pacific coast newspapers
are a little too hard in slurring the
man who is head and shoulders
above most of the scribblers. Call
off your dogs.
