Arsenic having been found to act as a preventive of malarial fever, Mr. w. Mattieu Williams has sug gested that the generally dQndemned arsenical wall-papers may be useful as a protection against the dangers of regions subject to malaria. A singular case in charge of Dr. Strumpell, of Leipsig, a few years ago, was that of a young man in whom brain disease had destroyed all sen sibility to touch, and also the func tions of one eye and one ear. Tho youth was wide awake, conscious and intelligent when the remaining eye and ear were open, but at once be came unconscious when they were carefully closed. Use op Solar Poweb. In a new French apparatus the heat of the sun falling upon metallic plates tightly covering a thin layer of a volatile liquid, like ammonia, is combined with the natural coolness of water to generate power for pumping. With plates having a surface of forty square yards, such an apparatus would hourly raise 792 gallons of water G5 feet in warm climates, and at Auteuil raises over 300 gallons per hour. Hydrophobia Most Go. Pasteur has long been experimenting with inoculation as a means of preventing hydrophobia, and is now putting the final touches to a method which he is confident wilL assure to animals including man exemption from the terrible disease. He intends to put his system in practice at once, and has already added to his many trials ono upon a human subject "a little boy who had received several bites from a mad dog. The Camphor Supply. While only 225 miles long and 83 wide, the island of Formosa, just conquered by the French, is very valuable for its richness in animal and vegetable life. One of its products is camphor, of which it is the world's chief source of supply, although the tree (Laurus camphora) also grows in Borneo, Su matra, Japan, and China. Tho cam phor is distilled from the finely cut wood in gently heated crucibles, the vapors being condensed upon a net work of rice stems. buiciDE in Nature. Man is not the only animal that suicides. Her rings and other fishes have sought death by rushing ashore in myriads ; regiments of ants, by deliberately marching into streams; swarms of rats, by migrating in tlie face of their deadly foes ; and even butterflies, by flying in immense clouds straight out to sea. It would be interesting to learn the causes of such cases of ap parent wholesale and deliberate self destruction. Is the act a purely con scious one, or are the creatures vic tims of disease mental or physical? Using the Earth's Heat. There is abundant reason for believing that tlie earth's crust is very thin, asserts Mr. J. Starkie Gardner, and it seems not impossible that some means may bo devised for utilizing the intense heat of the molten mass below. This is already being done, in fact, to some extent, an artesian well having been bored at Pesth to obtain warm water for public baths, etc. From a depth of about 3,000 feet a large quantity of water heated to 101 de grees Fahrenheit pours forth, and the boring is to be continued until water at 173 degrees is yielded. Molecular Minuteness. The odoriferous particles which aflect tlie organs of smell must be inconceiv ably smalJ.. Especially is this true of musk, which constantly emits u powerful odor for many years, and is aaid to show no apparent los3 of weicht. Papers perfumed with a single grain of ambergris were kept by Hafler for forty years, when the odor was as strong as over. The molecule of camphor sensible to the smell has been estimated by Borde nave to weigh one 2,262,584,000th of a grain. Keil has concluded that a drachm of asafetida exposed to tlie open air lose3 one C9,120th of a grain in weight each minute, or one 2,SS0th of its entire weight in a day. A Mystery. How the human sy.stem ever reeovers from the had effects of the nauseous medicines otten literally poured into It for the suppos itive relief of dyspepsia, liver couiplalnt.con stlpation, rheumatism and otherailments, is a mystery. The uiKehtcf dime by bad medi cines is gearcelyless than that caused by dls eiie. If they ho are weak, bilious, dyspep tic, constipated or rheumatic, would oftener be guided by the experience of Invalids who have thoroughly tested Hosteller's Stomach Hitters, they would lu every instance obtain the speediest aid derivable from rational medication. This medicine lsasearchingand at the same time a thoroughly sare remedy, derived from vegetable sources, and possess ing, in consequence of its bxsis of pure .spirits, properties as a medicinal stimulant lr-it to be found in the fiery local bitters and stimulants often resorted to by the debilitated, dyspep tic and languid. Mrs. Morgan, widow of the ex-governor and senator, can draw her check for from $10,000,000 to $12,000.000. No nausea; no reaction; no depress ing effects from Eed Star Coagh Cure. Bonner wojks hard two or three days a week and then returns to his fas't horses. Not content with 100 first-clas3 animals he is ready to purchase any other that may excel on speed. Notwithstanding the fre quent attempts to impose on Bonner, it is said that he has never been "jockied" in a horse trade. He pays enormous prices, but he does not al low himself to be deceived. He is not only an equine amateur, but i3 also a student, and he told me that he had a hundred works on the horse, all of which he had carefully read. Bonner has a first-class assist ant in Oliver Dyer, who is one of the best working litterateurs in the city. He reads all articles submitted for publication, and this is one of the hardest features in literary labor. He told me that no man could read ju diciously more than two hours at a time, as his brain would then be foggy- Dyer was at om time a fa vorite with Greeley, and had a place on the Tribune. This was a third of a century ago, and hence he is one of the veterans of journalism. Bochester Chronicle. What the Star Tells. Proctor considers it a mistake to regard the new star in the Audromeda nebula as supporting the nebular hypothesis ot Laplace, as that celebrated guess at world-origins calls onlv for changes in nebulous matter so slow as to be imperceptible. The real truth taught by the sudden bursting forth of this star is that the Andromeda nebula is not, as many astronomers suppose. a vast galaxy of brilliant suns so distant as not to be resolvable by the most powerful telescopes, but that it is simply a star-cloud forming a part ot ourowngaiaxv or universe. And what is true of the Andromeda neb ula is probably so of others, so that it may be concluded that none of tho nebula? or star-clouds are external to our own galaxy, and that tlie other galaxies of which so much has been written do not exist. At the "hop" of a summer hotel .some of the natives had been invited in. A young lady being solicited for a round-dance by a son of the soil and noticing with dismay that he was about to grasp her waist with a large and perspiring palm, she asked him if he would not kindly use his handkerchief. "0. yes, inarm," said Hayseed pleasantly, and applying the article to his nose, In sounded a cheerful blast that shook the chan delier. :sSk32aL THE GREAT o FOR LBVER DISEASE symptoms- liittercrbad taste in mouth; toncuc coated white or covered with a brown fur; pain in the back, sides, or joints often mistaken for Rheumatism; sour stomach; loss of appetite; sometimes nausea and waterbrash, or indigestion; flatulency and acid eructations; bowels alternately costic and Ux; headache; loss of memory, with a painful sensation of having failed to do something which ought to have been done; debility : low spirits; a thick, ellotv appearance of the skin and eyes ; adryecugh; fever; restlessness; the urine is scanty and high-colored, and, if allowed to stand, deposits a sediment.
