Judge Taylor has disposed of an enormous amount of work during the present term of court, in many cases holding night sessions after having been- on the bench all day. He is winning golden opinions from all for the strict impartiality of his actions andthe good judgment displayed in his judicial acts. It is said the latest way of ho'cus ing a customer in a San Francisco dive is to wet the inside of a beer glass, puff tobacco smoke into it un til a thick, filmy coating has been formed, which is allowed to dry. Sen ator Logan is present. Dement claims that the entire federal system of the territory is a rotten fraud. The report, which is said to be very sensational, goes on to show that he has had detectives working it up, and the investigation shows that the most of the laud in the territory of Utah has been stolen by the rail roads and by prominent citizens, both Mormon and Gentile. Half of the land has been taken up by Mor mons in a fraudulent manner.. Much of the remainder has been taken up by gentiles in & manner equally fraud ulent It has all been secured by collusion and corrupt procedure on the part of federal officials. He also learns that the Mormons have spent vast sums to prevent adverse legisla tion, and that a certain United States senator received $25,000 in an endea vor to defeat the Edmunds bill. Bishop always was a favorite come dian with Astdrians" and others who like genuine fun, and his present troupe ably support him in putting on the stage one of the most comical of American plays. From the rise of the curtain to its final fall he kept the audience in a roar. He deserves genuine commendation, and needs no praise from any who saw and laughed with him and at him last evening. To-night he will give his new version of "The Widow Bedott" said to le the most comical of his personations. Blakenev returns to San Iraucisco on the Oregon to-day. Though in ill health yet he felt it his duty to journey northward and note the condition of that important branch of the pnblic service over which he has supervision on this coast He has nothing but praise for the efficiency and diligence manifest ed by the captains and crews of the several stations. When he reached Shoalwater bay station last Wednes day morning he found Capt Brown and his men goiug to the assistance of a fnll rigged English ship which had evidently mistaken that point for the entrance to the Columbia river, and was heading in shore. From Capt Brown's point of observa tion the vessel appeared to.be ashore, head on. Fortunately those on board realized their position in time and worked round, standing to the north ward. There was no means of making out the name of the vessel. Major Blakeuey is complimentary in his remarks concerning the Shoal water bay station and the manner in which it is conducted, and also of the prompt manner in which Capt Har ris and his crew acted at the cape on the night when the ill-fated Carrie B. Lake went ashore on the weather beach. He is desirous of having a full set of signal flags furnished the Shoalwater bav station and is also intending to recommend to the head officer of the service that at least a gun and life line be placed at Loom is' on the beach for immediate use. However prompt Capt Harris may be it necessarily delays him to be obliged to transport all necessary appliances in the event of such a cat astrophe as that of the Carrie Ji. Lake, and if a gun and life line were at Looinis' orsome suitable place on the beach where it would be proper ly cared for and kept ready for use in case of emergency, it would enable the men to reach the scene of possi ble disaster much sooner, and could be used even before they had arrived, as its working is very simple and easily understood Begarding the proposed new life service station at Ft. Stevens, Major Blakeney is particularly soliciious that it Bhould bo built. He embodied a recommendation for its construc tion in his last annual report, and would be glad to have the Astoria chamber of commerce and the Port land board of trade take Buch affirma tive action in the matter as would aid in the procuring of the necessary appropriation. It will require a spe cial act of congress; the urgency tmd necessity for such station is apparent and as these commercial bodies have accomplished muoh in the way of aid ing commerce and augmenting the conveniences thereto, the superin tendent is desirous that an effort be made in this direction at the earliest possible opportunity. He is doing all he can in the matter, and asks the cooperation of all who realize the necessity and appreciate the impor tance of the proposed work. THE TRANSATLANTIC MUDDLE. Lontok, Jan. 29. The Telegraph begius its leader with the questien: "Will Mr. Par.nell be a member of the new cabinet? The question sounds startling at first sight, yet we mean the inquiry all in good faith. To de vise a plan for home rule, and iu it to ignore Mr. Parnell, is like inventing a machine and forgetting to make al lowance for friction. Our kinsmen of the United States have taken into the federal cabinet ex-confederate offi cials. We gave over the government of Canada not merely to agitators, but to men who had fought us with arms.' This morning's News, in a double leaded leader, lectures the queen on a rumor which it says, "we fiud is generally accepted in political circles, that she is insisting on Lord Salis bury remaining in office." It then al ludes to another rumor, that she will not send for Gladstone, and hopes she will not "cast so marked a slight, not only upon the great statesman who has served her through half a century, but upon public opioion em phatically expressed iu the general election." Alluding to the mention of Parnell in the cabinet, it says: "If he accepts office under the English government his influence is gone." The Standard this morning says the queen will unquestionably sum mon Gladstone to form a cabinet The outlook is still growing bright er. Centripetal force is pulling the liberal party together. Chamberlain has completely turned around, and will be in the cabinet and support whatever line Gladstone takes. Glad stone himself is extremely well satis fied with all that has happened. He is perfectly ready to take office and form a cabinet A Startling: Discovery. Physicians are often startled by re markable discoveries. The fact that Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption and all Throat and Lung diseases is daily curing patients that they have given up to die, is startling them to re alize their sense of duty, and examine into the merits of this wonderful dis covery; resulting in hundreds of our best Physicians using it in their practice Trial Bottles free atW. She was at once seized by the customs officers, for violation of the revenue laws. Col. Evans, ex-treasury agent, was here waiting for the steamer. He is employed by her owners to attend to her case, and at once offered bonds to release the ves sel. The steamer has gone to Seattle, where Judge Greene is now holding court to have her bonds approved. She will then proceed to Portland. Capt. Carroll has been very sick, and is still ill. sHo is threatened with pneumonia. He denies all con nection with the opium smuggling. The steamer was not much injdred while ashore in Alaska. The steamship Idaho is owned by the firm of Goodall, Perkins & Co., and the senior member of the firm in discussing the recent opium seizure, said, to a San Francisco Call reperter: "Our steamer," said he, "makes peri odical trips betweea Alaska and Portlaud, stopping at Port Towusend botn ways for freight and passengers. We were disturbed over the discov ery of a small lot of opium on board the steamer some time ago, and did all in our power to discover the guilty parties, that we might turn them over to the government It is an open se cret that smuggling goes on, but it is done very quietly. We have dis charged some of our employes for -complicity in smuggling schemes. We had a case to-day of a purser whom we had to pay offand discharge on thi3 account But we always had faith in Captain Carroll's integrity. and will continue to until we get more authentic and definite advices. At Kassan bay where thi3 seizure is alleged to have taken place, there ia a cannery where salmon is put uo. This was owned by a man, as I un derstood the story told me by Cap tain Carroll, who owed the captain some money, and in payment of the claim the man turned "the cannery over to the captain. The cannery, I believe, was a poor investment and the captain has been trying to sell it. Our company of course will make strict investigation into this matter, and will do ail in its power to assist the government iu bringing all offend ers to justice. If any officer in our service is guilty of smuggling we have no use for him. I can say noth ing further in the matter until more dennite information has been re ceived." Proper Treatment Tor Coughs. That the reader may fully understand what constitutes a good Cough and Lung Syrup, we will say that Tar and Wild Cherry is the base of the best rem edies yet discovered. These Ingredi ents with several others equally as effi cacious, enter largely into Dr.Bosanko's Cough and Luug Syrup, thus making it one of the most reliable now on the mar ket.
