(I) (The gjmttj gMtonmn ASTORIA. OKEGOX: ntlDAV JAJilTAHY 23. 1SSG VHOmiilTlON IX POLITICS. Thk national prohibition movc nuM.t which was organized at Pittsburg in S3, tended entirely to the promotion of the Democratic party's chances of success, and really made Cleveland's election n sible by depriving the Repub lican party of votes that it should have had, not only on general tfiKiples, but because of aid and comfort ypreiously given to the Jempejrance cause. The prohibi tForiisiEs of the St. John variety rhesp, in othpr words, to "rebuke" the only party that had ever given them favor or sympathy by help ing to win a victory for the party that never failed in anv instance to denounceand resist their efforts to suppress the liquor traffic. Ac cording to their, peculiar logic, huviiig gained all they could for th present from the Republican varty, the' best .thing to do was to take away the power of said party tp render them any assistance in t! p futur. . fyis'not to be believed for a minienMhat they had any hope of Meeting their own candidate for .resident." They made no pre-.-nsioC that sort. Neither did th - pretend lo be working sim plv for virtue's sake, without any .preference between the two irreat Jj it, j. parties of Uhc country. St. John tpenlyproclaimed his ho-tility to tie Republican cause, and his sup porters as a cl:is wen' animated by the same feeling. It was well understood that the prohibitionists v.cre in the main Republicans, and that the subtraction of their votes from the Republican strength meantajust o much addition to the Democratic opportunity of ear ning the election. S) fully was this realized, as the returns proved, that Democratic prohibitionists, uhile standing by the local nomi- natioJisjof their party, refused, rule, to vote for St. John, and us a cast their ballots directly for Cleveland. "Iriie object of chief importance in their scheme was to beat the Re pnblican party; to that ond, every other consideration was practically "ubordinaled. There is nothing to be plea'ded for them, therefore, on the score of ignorance or misap , prehension. They knew exactly what they wert? doing, and rejoiced over it when it was done. To.snyft.hat this result was ut terly unjustifiable is to state it mildly. In all our political history there has not been another such a flagrant instance of evil returned orfgoocljfand treachery for friend ship and confidence. The com plaint that the Republican party had not been sufficiently coura geous and progressive in its treat ment of ithe liquor question was without 'any warrant of faet. On the -contrary, there was decided tpf-timony tp the effect that it had one too boldly and too far in that respect. It had unquestionably passedempefance laws in differ ent states of such radical and strin gent form that they could not be enforced--laws which were in ad vanceof public sentiment, that is to say, and therefore serving to show that more had reaiiv been attempted than the people were willing to indorse. Tt was clearlv not for want of Republican sympa thy with positive and adequate tem- perance methodsthat "the dreams of the prohibitionists had not been rdiilbedbefore the opening of the last'presidential contest; and cer tainly the Democratic party never manifested any, "such interest in the work of redeeming the land froov drunkenness as entitled it to support for temperance purposes. The familiar claim of the St. John people that theyjareimitating the acl!csTPtlfif abolitiohists, mav be disposed of byshdwing that the two cases have little in common, and that the little they have in -' "commbrr'fdrbodes disaster lo pro hibition partisanship. The old liberty party did not nominate j ttsiFremonfc, elect Lincoln, or emau cipate the slaves. It did precisely what the prohibition parly has done made a shy at everything and accomplished nothing, except to defeat Clay and elect Polk, and thus bring on the Mexican war, with its burden ol expense and loss of life, and the subsequent acquisition of territory for the up holding of more slave states, out of which came the "Wilmot provi so struggle, the fugitive slave law, the repeal of the Missouri com promise, the Dred Scott decision, and finally the war of the rebel lion. The idea of anticipating any benefit to the temperance cause throughout the country from the election of a Democratic president and the restoration of Democratic practices and influences in the management of the affairs of the government was preposterous. All the traditions and sentiments of that party are opposed to the ends which the prohibitionists have in view. "What the result of such an experiment is morally certain to be may be seen, in a small way, in Maine, where a ven ture of a similar kind has been carried to actual Conclusion. At the election in Portland last March a third ticket was put into the field by the prohibitionists with a professed desire to facilitate the enforcement of the siate temper ance law. It received only 413 out of the 5,933 votes cast; but that small vote sufficed to prevent an election, and the Democratic candidate for mayor lacked only 33 votes of a plurality. The re sult, practically, was to give Port land free whisk' by the action of the prohibition part': and since then the law has been a dead let ter, and tippling prevails openly and to an extent never known be fore. One example of this kind is sufficient to indicate the gen eral tendency of third parties as temperance agencies. There is no need of a third party in our politics to advance the great and beneficent reform to which the prohibitionists claim to be so ar dently attached; bnt there is need of influence and instruction to make effective laws already in ex istence.
