Ktory of the I'rodiffal Son Told to
Tsvo Hundred Tramp.
Two hundred as able-bodied tramp3 ;
as ever lodged in a jolice station on
a cold night tendered Bob Burdette,
the funny man of the Brooklyn Lagle,
a reception at me lecture room ot the
Sunday Breakfast Association, on
Twelfth Street, above Kace. The
extraordinary occasion had called for
so unusual a" u-e of .oap and water
that Uie habit tips of the place felt
st ran n, found it hard to recognize
one another, and, as a consequence,
did not deport thenisolves with tiicir
wonted jieniality. The 200 gentle
men of leisure occupied the choice
beats in the body of the church and
the uninitiated into the Freemasonrv
of thi? craft hunted places in the gal
leries and in the side pews.
Despite the fart that Mr. Burdette
is excessively bashful he was placed
the central flower in a bouquet of
pretty jrirls who vocalize for the
delectation of the patrons of the soup
kitchen. When the humorist looked
over the high desk and called his
hosts, "rav brothers," the most ap
preciable difference between him and
tluin was that they had plentv of
ban and it stood o'n end, while he
hadn't much left to blow away and
it was plastered over a spot on top of
the hea 1 v. ith secretive intent. Tak
ing it for granted that each of the
gentlemen before him had spent a
handsome patiimony in luxurious
living at some more" or less t emote
period in his existence, he preached
a little sermon on the prodigal son.
"My brothers," he said, carefully
running his lingers over the slicked
spot on his head, "a man is a man,
drunk or sober. The world doesn't
want you to be an eternal apologist.
I'm the poorest man in the world to
preach, because I don't want to scold.
I would rather excuse a man in a
column and a half than accuse him
ten lines' worth. But I don't know
that a drunkard is the greatest crim
inal in the world. Somehow I've got
an id-a a lier's worse than a drunk
ard, bcau?e he sins deliberately.
You can't lie by accident. There "is
no hall-way place. You can't claim
a scratch. Kvory one is a good shot.
"Then theio's stealing. When a
man steals he doesn't intend to con
vey or misappropriate. He steals
because he don't tell the owner ho
intends to take the property. If I
stop a man and tell him to "'whack
up' or I'll whack him over the head,
I'm a thief. If a man lies to me in a
horse trade and beats me and perad
veuture I don't beat him and I
never could get the best of a horse
trade that man steals from me.
Any one of these crimes is meaner
than getting drunk. Drink is a great
levcler. It is as good as death at
that business. It will level the rich
man as quickly as the poor and send
them both rolling in the gutter.
""Heard about the prodigal son?
Of course you have. You were all of
you prodigals, only yon haven't gone
back to the old man yet. The prodi
gal was a gallus young chap. His
father was mayor of the town, I be
lieve. When he went out of town he
had a Saratoga full of store clothes,
a high hat, a cane, a shirt that but
toned behind, two-buttoned, lemon
colored kid gloves, and a diamond.
All the other boys envied him. And
he had a stocking full of money.
"The prodigal had a good time a
right down uproarious good time
drunk even' night and a head on him
in the morning. Didn't know what
to do with his moncv. His friends
did, though. They always fiid out.
There had to come that dreadful
fifteen minutes when a man goes
through his clothes and finds not a
red. Then the bar-keeper threw him
out. When that prodigal boy footed
it back in his old straw hat rim, a
gunny sack and nothing but stone
bruises on his feet, he arranged a
pretty little speech for the old man.
Ilf Mllll'r vmllnnntinln 41. n ...!..
lie wanted a soft berth in the kitchen.
But before he trot near nnnmrli W f tm
dogs to bark at him the old man .saw
him and he et things up handsomely.
He put his own clothes on him, put
a blood-stone i ing on his linger, and
put fiddlers in the corner.
"Now turn your backs upon the
husks and the swine, my friends, and
come home to the old man come
home to your fiiemls."
Under'the genial influence of Mr.
Buidette's sermon a dozen of hi3
hearers signed the pledge.
The iuitly Excused Him.
A noted scientist had his entire
wardrobe stolen from him last week
with the exception of a few paper
collars. He had an engagement to
call on a young lady up the Hudson
River. He sent the following dis
patch :
"I have had all my clothes stolen
except some paper collars. Hut that
fact will not deter me from coining."
He received the following telegram
in respense:
"If yon have nothing but paper
collars'to wear do not come. I love
French ait, but not French realism."
The author of "Delusions of Acci

The XiCtter I in Spanish.
A few days since a stranger from
the unconverted wilds of the east,
where tenderfeet attain their highest
state of sensitiveness, came out to
Albuquerque, New Mexico, to visit a
friend. While walking along Rail
road Avenue he said to his friend :
"There goes a man I met up at La
Junta," giving the j its natural pro
nunciation. "You mean La Hunta," the friend
replied. ''That is a Spanish name,
and in that language j lakes the
sound of h."
"Is that so? Well, I must try to
catch onto that."
After strolling along a short dis
tance further he asked :
' Where are these Jemes Springs,
of which I sec so much in tho
papers?"
"You should call them IIaymcs3
Springs; they are over here in the
mountains about sixty miles."
"Darn the language it breaks me
all up. That's a pretty nice house
over there that Arm! jo House, isn't
it?" and again he gave the j its
proper pronunciation.
"You mean the Armiho House;
yes, it's a good one, too."
"Damischa way of abusing the
English alphabet. I reckon, then,
that must be the HalTa Bros.' store
down the street there?"
"Xo, that is not a Spanish name.
I think it is French. However, it is
pronounced as spelled."
" Well, how in Santa Fe is a fellow
goin' to tell what's Spanish and what
isn't? Why couldn't they build
their language accordin' to the origi
nal plans?"
"Oh, you'll soon catch on. You
will find it safest to give the Spanish
pronunciation to nearly evcrj'thinj
here.'"
An hour later they sat down at the
table of the San Felipe Hotel, and,
after scanning the bill of fare, the
stranger said to the waiter:
" You may bring me a nice, huicy
piece of roast beef, some pig's howl
with caper sauce, some fricasseed
hack-rabbit, some pork with apple
belly, some boiled potatoes with the
backets on unskun, you know
some tarts with currani ja I mean
currant ham, and, ah, some "
At this point the waiter swooned
and the guests in the room let out a
roar of laughter that gave the chan
deliers the chills and fever. This
made the stranger mad, and he
leaped to his feet like a crazy man,
took off his coat and threw it down
on the floor and stamped on it and
hewled:
"You fellers are try in' to play me
for a sucker, but by the eternal, you've
struck the wrong snag! Whoopee!
(and he jumped up and slapped his

His friends got hold of him and
took him from the loom, and as he
went through the floor he remarked:
"i kin takeahoke, but, by Hesus,
