GALVESTON ISLAND.
Tlic tracer Texas City on the Gulf
Of Mexico.
Galveston Island is several miles
wide and about 30 miles long, and
w ith the exception of coarse grass, a
fine collection of rattlesnakes, and
Galveston City, has not got anything
ou it. It is composed entirely of
sand, and at no place is it higher
than four feet above the level of the
Gulf of Mexico, except where it is
in a measure protected by the natu
ral sand hills formed by the action
of the winds and waves. These sand
hills occasionally soar up to the giddy
height of eight or ten feet, otherwise
the island is as flat as a boarding
house pancake.
On tliis island the city of Galves
ton, named after a Spanish hidalgo
by the name of Galvez, is situated.
It was here that Lafitte had his
headquarters, and took merchant
ships in out of the wet.' Galveston
is a large and beautiful citv, of not
j less than 35,000 people, and it is the
principal seaport ol Texas.
It is strange to think that all the
material for this large city, with its
handsome private residences, its
large business houses, churches, and
an unfinished artesian well, had to
be brought over a trestle bridge a
mile long, from the main land, but
such is the case. The unfinished
artesian well is the only institution
the materials for which were ob
tained on the spot.
The streets of Galveston are broad,
straight, and shaded by rows of
oleander bushes that grow twenty
feet high, ami fill the air with their
delicious perfume. For this reason
Galveston is called the Oleander
City.
For fresh water, Galveston is en
tirely dependent on the rainfall,
which is captured in cisterns and
kept on tap. Occasionally the cis
terns run dry, and some inconven
ience is experienced by temperance
fanatics and milkmen.
The beach at Galveston is said to
be equal to the best in the world in
the requirements for sea bathing. It
slopes very gradually, and the surf
is not very heavy. It is said to be
superior to that of Long Branch.
This summer, among the attractions,
was a school of devil fish, one of
which was captured. lie measured
sixteen feet long, and like a San
Antonio alderman, was broader than
he was long.
The climate of Galveston is
warmer in winter than that of any
other Texas city. Like most islands,
Galveston Island is surrounded by
water, which in this case envelopes
the island in a warm atmosphere.
"When the Texas Norther, which is
colder than public charity, swoops
down on Galveston, it bounces over
the W'arm atmospheric influence.
For this reason oranges and lemons
mature at Galveston. Elsewhere in
the State, they are killed off by
Northers, unless they are taken in
after dark and put by the stove.
Galveston, like the house of the
foolish man, mentioned in the New
Testament, is built on the sand, but
as the city does not fall, the in
ference is, that perhap3 the sand on
which it is built is of a different kind
from the New Testament sand. The
people of Houston, which is a rival
of Galveston, say it is the heavy
mortgages on the Galveston houses
that prevent them from being washed
away.
Salt water is reached by digging a
few inches in the sand. The founda
tions of the houses are actually laid
in water, but that does not affect
their stability. Galveston is the
oniy cuy wnere a man can una a
watery grave without having to be
drowned first. The water has to be
bailed out of the grave before the coffin
can be put in it. Texas Sittings.
Thinss Worth Knowing.
Consumptive night sweats may bo
arrested by sponging the body at
night in salt and water.
A half teaspoonful of soda in half
a cup of water will relieve sick head
ache caused by indigestion.
A fever patient is cooled off and
madecomfortable,by frequent spong
ing with warm soda water.
A hard cold is ofttime3 cured by a
cup of hot lemonade, taken at bed
time, as it produces perspiration.
Teething children may be relieved
of convulsions by being immersed
in a warm bath, and cold water ap
plied to the head.
When going from a warm room
out into the cold air, close your
mouth and breathe through youi
nose to prevent taking cold.
For nervous headache, when the
pain is over the eyes, and the temples
arc throbbing, apply cloths wet with
cold water to the head, and hot baths
to the feet.
Warm mustard water should be
given to one who has accidentally
swallowed poison; this will cause
vomiting; after that give a cup of
strong coffee; that will counteract
the remaining effects.
For croup or pneumonia, bruise
raw onions, lay on a cloth with pow
dered gum camphor sprinkled over
it, and apply to the chest and lungs,
and cover with hot flannel. This is
a sure cure if taken in time.
The juice of red onion is a perfect
antidote for the sting of bees, wasps,
hornets, etc. The sting of the
honey-bee, which is always left in
the wound, should first be removed
Ladies' Home Journal.
Bill Rye and the Bronze Goddess.
I am in favor of a Statue of Liberty
Enlightening the AYorld, because it
will show that we keep it on tap
winter and summer. We want the
whole broad world to remember that
when it gets tired of oppression it
can come here and oppress U3. We
are used to it and we rather like it.
If we don't like it we can get on the
steamer and go abroad, where we
may visit the effete monarchies and
have a high old time.
The sight of the Goddess of Lib
erty standing there night and day,
bathing her feet in the rippling sea,
will be a good thing. It may be
productive of good in a direction
that many have not thought of. As
she stands there day after day bath
ing her feet in the broad Atlantic,
perhaps some mossgrown Mormon
moving toward the far West, a con
firmed victim of his matrimonial
habit, mav fix the bright picture on
his so-called mind, and, remember
ing how, on his arrival in New York,
he saw Liberty bathing her feet with
impunity may be led in after years
to try it on himself. Boston Globe.

Only a beautiful maiden
Bathing herself in the sea,
Flirtinif with jollj old Neptune,
Taking hU rudenejj with glee;
Wading far out in the low-sheltin- sand,
Laughingly riding on wave to the strand.
Only a crab In the water.
Laving in quietude there,
Thinking, perhaps, of hll daughter.
Or of his wandering heir;
Struck on the head in the midst ct his dream,
Snapping at two limbs that threat'ningly gleam
Only an unhappy sudden
Uttering squeal after squeal;
Pounding the water to fury,
Pointing a finger to heal
Where a crab clings, his day-dream forgot,
Fast as a mortgage hangs on to a lot.
