ID Wm gattg gforan ASTOKIA. OREGON TUESDAY JANUARY19. 188C The Welcome expects to hear of the indictment of several Port landers for timber laud frauds when the Vancouver grand jury meets in February. Jas. Anthony Fjioude, the dis tinguished English historian, says, "The American Union commands the respectful fear of all mankind." But the country needs a navy and coast defenses all the same. The East Portland Vindicator declares that the recent whisky law passed by the legislature at taches no tine to those who violate it, and that dealers will evade the law by not taking out a license. Delegate Vookiiees, of "Wash ington tcrritorj-, is reported as ex pressing his belief that the senate committee will report in favor of the bill for the admission of the territory into the Union. Secretary Exdicotx says the board of coast defences will recom mend that work bejnn at once for the protection of San Francisco, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Savanah, and will also contrive to have the entire coast fortified. The Mercury publishes an in terview with Tom Merry wherein it is said that the true name of the notorious E. J. Dawnc is James McDonald, and that he hails from Pictou, Nova Scotia. 'Tis a good name and a pity that its owner, if so he be, disgraces it. The board of directors of the Northern Pacific railroad company have kindlv donated to the citv of Tacoma a strip of the water front that the corporation owns and con trols in front of that cit'. The piece donated is understood to be as much as will be covered by the extension of a street to tide water the width of one street. With such magnanimity the N. P. R. R. opens the new year. By July they will probably print "Astoria55 on their maps. It is reliably stated that three railroads are now building west ward to make connection with Pa cific coast ports, the Chicago, M:l waukee & St. P.iul, which is build ing westward through Nebraska, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, which owns its own line as far :u Denver, and is heading for San Francisco, and the Chicago & North western, which is building1 through Wyoming to Corinne to connect with the Central Pacific. Five lines of roads now span the conti nent, and two more are among the probabilities by the close of '88. Dismal reports come from Ire land. Famine and eviction, twin products of English misrule, are wreaking havoc in the south and west, among those least able to endure, and among all classes lurks the dread of worse to come. It is thought that Lord Wolaelcy, the hero of the Soudan, will be sent over with dictatorial powers to put the island under martial law, and it is even hinted that Cromwell's massacre at Armagh may be reenacted. It J-joks as though the epitaph of Emmet must be postponed. The spirit of Cartyle seems to dominate in England, and his wish that the whole island could be submerged in two fathoms of water for twenty four hours, appears to actuate the present, as it has succeeding gen erations of ungenerous foes. Stockholders" Meeting. STOCKHOLDERS' MKETttG OF THE U liriusn-Amencai'Kg. Uo.,bKccnanicr, B. C will be held at the office of B. Yoimir. Upper Astoria, Oregon, on the lOth day of January, 1RSG, at a a. m., for the purpose of electing a uoaru 01 uireiors ior me ensuing year, aud transact any other business as wight lawfully come before the meeting. Dated this 2nd day of January, 1S83, by the oraer 01 me rresiaenr. ANDREW YOUNG, Secretary. BEST IN THE MARKET! Snow Flake Flour! A WRONG HOVE. Reports received at the general land office state that the Northern PaciGc railroad company is making extensive sales of timber on public lands in this territory which are claimed as indemnityJands, but which have not been approved to the com pany. Commissioner Sparks has rec ommended that suit be instituted to recover 4,000,000 feet of spruce and fir logs cut in Ghehalis county, under cover of the railroad claim, and sold to the Hoquiam mill company. It seems to us that it would be more the act of justice, if not of law, to proceed directly agains the railroad company for selling the right to cut from indemnity land than against a mill company for the innocent, it may be, purchase of the logs. A mill company buys logs from auy one who offers them for sale, and it is hardly in their province to demand that each and every logger who offers the products of their labor for sale should present awarranty deed to the land from which the logs are taken, before they can be safely purchased. We say, by all means prosecute any and all persons who may be caught in an attempt to despoil the public domain, but it certainly appears as though, in this iustauce, the railroad company was the guilty party, and Bhould bo made to suffer for the crimes committed. Such a policy as is marked out by Commissioner Sparks if vigorously prosecuted, would have the effect of involving every mill company in western Wash ington and Oregon in endless litiga tion, and completely paralyze the lumber business of this coast, while the innocent (?) railroad companies would laugh in their sleeve at the sharp game they had played, and slap their plethoric pockets with satis faction and glee. Chelialis Vidctte, 15. A DOUBLE TRAGEDY. Victoria, Jan. 1C A shocking murder occurred early Wednesday evening, on the road between New "Westminster and Port Moody. A man named Walker had squatted on some land, and had taken D. Eobson, his partner, Smith, and another man named Jones, to see the place, wish ing to dispose of the right. They ar rived at the ranch late in the after noon, and after dark Walker picked up a double-barreled shotgun and said that he was going out to shoot a crane. As it was then after dark, one of the men remarked that it was rather late to go shooting, when Walker said ho might as well tell them his intentions; that he was go ing to "cook their goose" for them. He then shot Kobson through the breast, killing him instantly. Jones attempted to take the gun away from the murderer, but received the con tents of the second barrel in the leg, shattering the knee, the ball coursing down his leg into his foot. Walker then made for Smith with a knife, but the latter succeeded in getting out of the cabin and escaping. Walker, who is an Englishman, then lashed Jones to the body of Robson and fled. The wounded and dead man were found lying together, by constables, who arrived a few hours later Later reports about the Port Moody tragedy say that Smith disabled Walker with a half burned brand which he caught from the fireplace, and carried Eobson's body away with him. The same night a party of con stables found Walker lying dead on the floor of the cabin. Smith's in juries are slight. Rarkentinc 'Skagit" Disabled. Sax Fkaxcisco, Jan. 17. The bark cntine Skagit, which arrived to-day from Port Gamble, ran ashore after getting inside the heads, and tore away part of her keel and lost her rudder. She was towed off later by tugs. She lost the wind shortly af ter crossing the bar, and the sweep of the tide carried her toward the shore at Lime point. Steamer "Holyokc" Disabled. Post Townsekd, Jan. 17. The steamer HolyoJce, Capt. Nichols, struck on Bird rock, in Rosario straits last night, and knocked her fore foot out, causing her to leak badly. She was gotten off and started for Bur row island, near the rocks, and beached in order to keep from sink ing. The water put out the furnace fires just as she struck shore. The steamer Virginia has gone to her assistance, and she will bo floated, repaired temporarily and brought to this place.
