ASTORIA. OREGON:
SUNDAY.
J ANUA11Y 17. 1SSG
A WORD FOR OURSELVES.
The Astoriax is trying to -work
up a little telegraphic service that
will be a credit to the city. Noth
ing gives so much life to a news
paper as a well-filled local column
and a synopsis of the world's news
by telegraph. As regards the lo
cals we direct attention to the fact
that Astoria is the only city in the
state, the only place in the com
monwealth, of any size, from
which it is not found necessary for
some one to send local reports to
the Portland papers. From every
other section, east, south and west
are sent local news letters to the
Portland papers. It sometimes
happens that the letters that the
Oregonian or ITeics or Standard
correspondents in the several
places send are more interesting,
more newsy, than the local col
umns of the local papers them
selves. The first thing a local
paper should aim to do is to cover
its own field, to relate fairly and
promptly the occurrences going
on in the community and section
where it is published. This is a
duty it owes its patrons, and in
our case the fact that whatever
Astoria news appears in those pa
pers usually appears first in The
Astoriax is pretty good evidence
that in this respect wo are not re
miss. " The telegraph service comes
next. No one that has never tried
has any idea how difficult and ex
pensive it is to get telegraphic
service down here. We are mak
ing an effort in that direction.
Our success will he in direct pro
portion to the interest that As
torians manifest in the matter.
The proprietors of a newspaper
spend every cent of their surplus
earnings in improving the paper.
If we could we would cover one
side of The Astokian every
morning with dispatches; as it is
we are doing the best we can.
Our only source of revenue is
subscriptions and advertisements.
It is our boast that during many
years of work in the newspaper
business, and as proprietors of
newspapers in Nevada, California
and Oregon, that we have never
yet accepted a dollar from any
man to say anything or keep from
saying anything. This we believe
to be the only way to run an in
dependent newspaper. It is cer
tainly the only way for a man in
a newspaper office to preserve his
self respect.
We hasten, says the Boston
ITerald, to the defense of the
newspaper. Lying is not one of
its vices. The hardest work done
by newspaper men is hunting down
lies told by other people. If news
papers printed all the stories
brought to them, they might well
be denounced as lying sheets.
When a mistake is made in a
newspaper, it is because the vig
ilant reporter, or the conscientious
editor has not been able to detect
it in season. Publication speedilv
brings the correction when noth
ing else will. Many men are in
terested to lie, but a newspaper
is interested to tell the truth. Its
business being to purvey and bell
information, its chief interest is to
acquire a reputation to tell the
truth. Of course, the organs
have to lie a little, because it is
their duty to support their party,
whether it be right or wrong, but
an independent newspaper is
under no such obligation. Its chief
-motive is to learn the truth and
tell it.
The court of Alabama Claims
completed its award December 30
and turned over to the treasury
for payment a list calling for $10,
700,000. With interest added,
tkese figures are raised to $10,
000,000. -
The St. Louis treasurer of the
Grant Monument fund says: "We
iare sent 7,000. circulars into the
country for the association, but we
bare not received a single cent in
return."
The New York Journal of
Commerce of the loth, says:
"There is some reason to expect
that within three months the Pan
ama canal will be abandoned as a
failure, unless the French govern
ment chooses to help it with a loan
or guaranty. If the French com
missioner sent to examine the
work can resist the blandishments
of De Lesseps, who will be on the
spot to receive him, he will not
commit his government to an un
dertaking which probably will be
as unfortunate as Napoleon's in
tentions in Mexico.
The house committee on rivers
and harbors have resolved to limit
the total amount of the appropria
tion for improving rivers and har
bors to $1 1,000,000. Sums recom
mended for appropriation will in
no case be made public in advance
of the report of the bill.
The late Gen. Toombs of Geor
gia declared in an interview had
with him before his last illness that
in his opinion "the status of the
negro is not materially changed by
emancipation."
The real estate sales in Chicago
in 1885 aggregated about $18,
000,000. The value of new build
ings constructed, including 1,037
residences, was in the neighbor
hood of 19,000,000.
A Dakota woman drove twelve
miles through a snowstorm to get
the final patent on her land, to be
told, that it was withheld on ac
count of fraud.
The local option bill has passed
both houses of the Washington
territorial legislature.
