It costs a million and a half more to run the New York state govern ment now than it did live years aero. Jay Gould is now the richest man in America. He is estimated at $125,000,000 and is only forty nine years old. The total number of business failures in the United States dur ing 1S35 was 10,637, with liabili ties of $220,000,000.' Smith, the Vermonter who wants to succeed Edmunds as sen ator, is incautiously heralded as the richest man in the state. Tun ex-king regent of Portugal left his German-American widow, a Boston-born woman, by the waj', a fortune of $,000,000. Mir. Pakntj:ll probably receives the largest mail and sends the few est replies of any similarly conspic uous politician in the world. Piiksidkxt Cleveland having succeeded in shaking hands with 4AS people in sixteen minutes, has probably beaten the record. The railway track laid in the United States during the year just closed aggregated 3,113 miles, Missouri leading with 282 miles. The president recently re marked: "1 wake up sometimes in the night, and, seeing where I am, 1 imagine it is all a dream." Mks. Bakuios, widow of the late president of Guatemala, is staying in New Orleans this winter. She has a fortune of 8,000,000. Queex Viciokia's personal es tate is estimated at $30,000,000 and her lands at 15,000,000 in value. She rates about with Jay Gould. The word mugwump is to go into the revised editions of the dictionaries; but it will hardly satisfy the mugwumps if it is printed in no bigger type than the words "republican" and "demo crat." State and territorial exchanges are instituting the usual complai sant comparisons between the blizzards and freezings in the cast- ern and middle sections of the Union with the balmy vernal air of our favored Pacific coast. It is officially announced that in the short twelve da3's' war the Bulgarian losses were 500 killed, 2,000 wounded and 500 prisoners, while the Servian losses, of course by Bulgarian estimate, are 2,500 killed, 1,12G wounded and prison ers. Observant travelers say that every county in Europe has three prices for everything oh there. The first is for natives, the sec ond for Englishmen and the ihird for Americans. It is needless to add that the latter receive the full benefit of the highest pric'. The French republic is pirdoii ing anarchists who seek its de struction, thus proclaiming its own instability and encouraging fur ther attempts to overthrow the ex isting form of government on the part of those who see in mercy only an expression of weakness. David Davis is resting on his 5,000,000 or 6,000,000, and will not again enter politics. Tt is supposed that Mr. Davis will leave about $2,000,000 for the establish ment of a home for aged para graphers, he having been so often and so kindly mentioned by those useful and truthful persons. - ..I i - The friends of silver in the senate are responding to Beck's bugle blast and are bringing for ward facts, figures and arguments that make "Wall street realize that New York city and the gold ring -won't run this country yet awhile even if they have captured the president and secretary of the treasury. Democrats and Repub licans for once forgot party ties and faithfully echoed the senti ments of their constituents in a demand for the continuance of silver coinage. The fight is not yet won, but it will be. The value of the coal mined in the United States in a year far ex ceeds that of all the gold and sil ver combined. From government reports just issued it appears that the coal yield of 1884 -was $143, 700,000, that of silver $48,800,000 and that of gold 330,800,000, the coal product thus exceeding the combined product of silver and gold in value by $04,100,000. - M - - - At Bellaire, Ills., last "Wednes day, Gordon Apperson objected to the marriage of his sister-in-law to George Gallogly, whereupon that individual promptly disposed of objection and objector by seiz ing a chair and knocking Mr. Ap person into the fire where he was consumed. The dispatch states that "the bride swooned," which, under the circumstances, was very much to her credit. The work on the extension of the California & Oregon Railroad is not being pushed very vigorous ly this winter, owing partly to the great amount of water which has to be contended with on account of the late rains, and parthy on ac count of the uncertainty regard ing the land grant. None of the tunnels beyond Delta have yet been cut through, and little more is now being done than taking measures to protect the work al ready performed. What will be done when settled weather comes in the spring, has not yet been determined upon. A few miles of track have been laid beyond Delta, but the road cannot be said to have been extended beyond that point. IIKI.
