Attempted Incendiarism. ' The attempt was made sometime Sunday night, or yesterday morning to set fire to the fine residence that Capt. Geo. Flavel is building on Benton street Some paper and kindlings were placed under the outside stairs and saturated with coal oil and then set on fire. The door sill and door against which the fire was built are of redwood, a wood which will char and smoulder, but which it is difficult to ignite to a flame. Had the door been of more inflammable material the result might have been the de struction of the edifice. Capt. Flavel is totally at a loss to account for the motive that prompted such a dastard ly deed. For Heat. Tho finclfaftSOxM, lately occupied as a gymnasiKvncxt to Telephone Saloon. Holland possesses the es sential elements of pathos and truth: Labor is the honorable thing among men. There is uot a neatly graded lawn, a pretty garden, or a well- trained tree that does not tell of it It builds magnificent cities, and cre ates navies, and bridges rivers, and lays railroad tracks, and in fuses every part of the Hying locomotive. Where- ever a steamer plow3 the waves, or the long canal bears the nation's m- land wealth; wherever the wheat fields wave and the mill wheels turn, there labor is the conqueror and the king. The newspaper, wherever it spreads its wings, bears the impress of toilers hands. Sbonld not the la borer be well housed? Should not he have the best wife, and tho pret tiest children in tho world? Should not the man who produces all that he can eat and wear be honored? To us there is more truo poetry about the laborers life and lot than any! other mans under heaven. It mat ters not in what calling a man toils. if he toils manfully, honestly, and contentedly. The little tin pail should bo a badge of nobility every where, and in the "good time coming boys," it will be. IJkr Fire iu Wallula. About half past 5 yesterday morn ing fire broke ont in the laundry of j the Oregon Railway & Navigation company's depot and hotel building ' at Wallula Junction, aud before any- ( thing could be done to stay the progress of tho flames the i entire structure was reduced j to ashes. All the guests succeeded in making their escape and ! most of them saved their personal ef fects. Nearly all the furniture aid hotel appurtenances were burned. The building was erected by the rail- j roau company some three years ago . at a cost ot $50,000, and was one of the finest buildings of the kind on the coast. It was insured for $26,-1 090.
