WONDERFUL INVENTION.
Tliat Came to a Fort Worth, ar&n
"In tlie Dead of Xish-t.
Over 3 years ago Fred H. Brown
began the work of studying out to
an invention an idea which had
come to hiui that a telephone and
telegraph instrument could be made
which would work wilhouta battery.
For 3 years lie toiled and thought,
but seemed no nearer the goal than
when he started, until one niidit in
February last, about 2 o'clock in tho
inorninj:, he awoke suddenly from
sleep and found the invention in his
mind. Cold as it was, he jumped
out of bed, lighted a lamp, and be
gan to work. In a few months he
had perfected an instrument and
tried it at homo. Ho at once de
termined to go to New Yoik, but
before his departure, sold the right to
England to Messrs. George J.
Frankel and G. H. Shuttler; to
France and Germany to W. E.
Keye, who a week later accompa
nied Mr. Brown East.
The electricians of Mr. Gould and
Mr. Mackay inspected the invention
can'fully, and then "the Western
Union Telegraph Company and Bell
Telephone Company sent men to
Washinjjton to see if the method
could not be patented ; but Mr. Brown
had provided against all contingen
cies, and had patents covering every
thing. The immense value of tho
invention was seen by J. J. Safeley,
a capitalist, who brought it to the
notico of Austin Corbin, a million
aire. He formed a company, and
through Mr. Safeley bought tho right
to the United states lor ?l,000,00d,
paying $259,000 to Mr. Brown in
cash and giving ample security for
the payment of $750,000. Mr. Brown
returned to Fort Worth early this
week, disposed of his property here,
a-ul on Thursday night le.t with his
fami'y for Now "York, where he will
reside.
When he left New York, Bonanza
Mai-key was negotiating for Canada,
which is held by the inventor at $l,
000,000. Mr. Brown also brought
word that a wealthy man wanted
England, and was willing to pay a
large sum for it, which will induce
Messrs. Frankel and Shuttler to no
Ea-t in 30 or G3 days to look after their
interests. Mr. Ka'ye, the owner of the
riht for Germany and France, is
now in New York, and will leave in
a few days for Europe.
When Mr. Brown reaches New
York, a cable test will be made over
5,800 miles of cable, twice the dis
tance across the Atlantic. Instru
ments for this teat will lie completed
earty next week. A test was made
in New York not long ago over 8 U
miles of wire, and the instruments
worked as dear as a bell. In a few
days 100 miles of wire will be
stretched on Long Island for tests of
all descriptions.
As soon as possible, the company
in New York will get to work and
organize sub companies m all tho
btates. when a revolution in tele
phoning and telegraphing will surely
result.
Tho invention is a magneto tele
phone and telegraph without battery
a new system of transmitting tho
sound of the human voice without
using batteries of any kind. Brown
has had a hard time perfecting his
invention, being refused aid by
those to whom he applied. A short
time auo, Edwin F. Masterson, a
lawyer of means, and well acquainted
with prominent Eastern telegraph
and telephone men, Faw tho instru
ment ,ested, and at once wrote to a
director of the Western Union Tele
graph Company and president of the
Overland Telephone Company, set
ting forth the wonderful workings of
the invention. The Western Union
official went to General Charles A.
Tinker, and asked him to issue in
structions to some experienced man
ager in or near Fort Worth, to have
the instrument tested over the West
ern Union lines, and to report to him
at once. G. J. Frankel, manager
here, received the instructions, and
ordered the Cleburne manager to
assist him. In the afternoon of June
21, at 1 o'clock, Mr. Frankel, Mr.
Brown, the inventor, Mr. Masterson,
J. H. Murphy, Robert L. Moore,
operators, and a newspaper reporter,
were in the Fort Worth office. Mr.
Granger, an electrician, and C. M.
Bander, manager at Cleburne, were
in tho Cleburne office. The batteries
on the line were cut off from the
wire 33 miles long, and the magneto
transmitter and receiver attached at
both ends of the line. For 2 hours
the test went on, all parties talking,
and J. H. Murphy, by tapping on
the diaphragm of the instrument
telegraphing to the Cleburne opera
tor and receiving an answer in the
same manner. The voices of tho
Cleburno parties were very distinct,
and a marked feature was the ab- J
senceof all foreign noises interfering '
with and incident to other systems, i
The instrument used was com- i
posed of 2 ounces of wire and a half I
pound of steel, and can be made
for 25 cents. The transmitter is I
simply a horseshoe magnet, either 1
pole being covered with fine wire
codad carefully. The armature is a
disc of steel against which the voice
is thrown, then transmitted through
the masnet to tho wire. The receiver
is similar, but has a pmaller magnet.
It is claimed by the inventor that he
cart transmit the voice around the
world or across the Atlantic Ocean,
there being no limit as far as dis
tance is concerned, all that is neces

If we had lost our own chief good,
other people's good would remain,
and that is worth trying for.
It's a poor look out to come into
the world to make your fellow-creatures
worse off instead of better.
Good is slow; it climbs. Evil is
swift; it descends. Why should wo
marvel that it makes great progress
in a short time.
Thoughtlessness is never an ex
cuse for wrong-doing; our hasty
actions disclose, as nothing else does",
our habitual feeling.
If like wise men we look about us
and beyond us, we shall find no
cause for repining, but abundant
cause for wonder and gratitude and
praise.
Base all your actions upon a prin
ciple of right; preserve yoar integrity
of character, and in doing this never
reckon on the cost.
Let an independent thinker show
a fearless fidelity to his convictions,
and the shafts of bigotry and envy
fall helpless and harmless at his feet.
Character is not cut in marble it
is not something sold and unaltera
ble. It i3 something living and
changing, and may become diseased
as our bodies do.
Useful knowledge can have no
enemies, except the ignorant; it
cheribhes youth, delights the aged, is
an ornament in prosperity, and
yields comfort in adversity.
It is injurious to ho in a hurry, and
delay is often equally so; he is wise
who does everything in proper time.
Tardiness and precipitation are ex
tremes equally to be avoided. Ex
change. Of course, on such a bright morn
ing she couldn't resist calling around
to see how many of her friends had
returned from vacation. ' Whv,
Cicely, dear," she exclaimed, "so
you, too, have returned?" "Ye-es,
T I that ip, I haven't been away."
"But you have a beautiful tau'on
your complexion." "O yes. That
cost mo twenty-five cents, while a
vacation would have cost me $125.
I'll have a new cloak this fall, and
you'll have to fix up vour old one."
ft was cool enough to put the cloaks
on immediately.
